Chester-based travel writer Samantha Haylor embarked on a London adventure to immerse herself in the distinctively bohemian party scene at the very exclusive Home House

Great British Life: Grandeur from the outside inGrandeur from the outside in

Welcome to Home House London, where you will be transported to a world of refined luxury, spread across three exquisite Georgian townhouses, exuding the timeless style and glamour of old-world London. Originally envisioned by James Wyatt, the esteemed architect for George III, as a palatial retreat solely dedicated to enjoyment and entertainment, Home House immediately captivated us with its opulent furnishings and grandeur.

Escorted by our guide, we made our way to the room, taking in the sight of the magnificent marble staircase as we passed on our way to the vintage iron-barred lift, which transported us back in time to an era of Georgian grandeur as we ascended to our room.

As we entered the Earl Grey room, we were greeted by a sense of historical significance. The room was filled with natural light, thanks to large windows embellished with exquisite draperies, allowing a glimpse of the bustling streets of London outside. The walls boasted intricate patterned wallpaper and delicate motifs, reminiscent of the Georgian era. The carefully selected colour palette created a serene and sophisticated sense of ambience and the rich wooden furnishings, with their polished surfaces and intricate carvings, added a touch of timeless grandeur to the room.

The room was aptly named as it was at Home House that the renowned Earl Grey tea gained its popularity, as the property was occupied by Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey, from 1812 to 1819. Lady Grey used this very room to host gatherings for the influential political figures of that era.

Dining at Home House

The brasserie-style dining experience, with its scenic view of Portman Square, showcased the finest seasonal British ingredients. My culinary journey began with a delightful dish of poached Wye Valley asparagus accompanied by a truffle hollandaise and radishes. Moving on to the main course, I enjoyed a delectable butterflied sea bass, expertly paired with garden peas, spring vegetables, and a refreshing citrus dressing. To enhance the flavours, we indulged in a bottle of Rock Angel, Chateau d'Esclans 15 Côte de Provence, France 2021 — a sophisticated and well-structured Provençal rosé hailing from the same vineyard as Whispering Angel. As a sweet conclusion, I opted for the vanilla panna cotta with summer berries and a touch of basil, offering the perfect ending to an indulgent and lavish dinner.

After dinner, we headed to the bar for a digestif. The dimly lit, stylish decor was the perfect backdrop for creating a chic and intimate ambience, with plush sofas and armchairs inviting guests to relax and unwind. In addition to the lounge and bar, the club's courtyard garden offered a beautiful and tranquil spot to enjoy a drink as the sun dropped below the high-rise skyline on the warm summer evening. We felt extremely special, revelling in an experience I don’t believe you can find anywhere else at this level.

Private Members Club

Home House is a private members club, which also offers rooms to non-members, who are able to experience the pleasures once restricted to a lucky few. Not only can non-members enjoy a beautiful room in this beautiful property, but Home House extends member privileges to bedroom guests, ensuring that even non-members can partake in the club's exceptional facilities, including their busy calendar of events, planned to deliver something very special for their members they won’t find elsewhere.

Just browsing the upcoming calendar gives an intriguing insight into life at Home House over the summer. How about Jazz in the Drawing Room? This regular event looks to be a mesmerising evening that transports visitors to the golden era of jazz. As the melodies fill the air, the historic drawing rooms of Home House become the stage for talented musicians, their instruments harmonizing with the clinking of glasses and the hushed whispers of conversation.

Or are you perhaps an oenophiliac? The Sipping Society invites members and hotel residents to embark on a journey of taste and refinement as expert sommeliers and mixologists guide you through a very special tasting class. I think this one sounds pretty perfect, personally –it sounds most entertaining, as well as being educational – though there is a Meet the Producer event coming up, with Charlotte Gordon from Cloudy Bay. A bit of a theme developing here!

Next time I visit, I shall also take my gym kit, and make use of the state-of-the-art machines before settling into a sauna and steam experience. Or maybe I shall not do the former, but definitely do the latter...
