Mount Hawke Academy awarded £2,500 from Calor to fund new adventure playground

Mount Hawke Academy in Cornwall is celebrating after being awarded a grant of £2,500 to help fund their new adventure playground, as part of rural energy provider Calor’s annual funding scheme

The aim of the Calor Rural Community Fund is to give off-grid communities the chance to gain grants for projects that will improve local life. With a total fund of £50,000, this year the scheme offered funding for 21 different projects, with prize pots ranging from £1,000 up to £5,000.

Mount Hawke Academy is a primary school in an area with a high level of deprivation and so the new adventure playground aims to bring the community together towards a common goal. The Calor grant will be used to fund a ladder rope walk, stepping stones and a log traverse for the new playground.

Teresa Thomas, Finance and Administration Manager at Mount Hawke Academy said: “Mount Hawke does not currently have an adventure play area and our school’s current play provision is unfit for purpose, having been bought by the community through their fundraising efforts over eighteen years ago. By installing a new adventure playground, we will provide a much-needed play space for the community.”

“Calor’s generosity means that we can create a safe and fun environment for the children to play in. During school hours the playground will be used by the children, but before and after school it will be used by the whole village, making it an ideal community hub.”

Paul Blacklock, Calor’s Corporate Affairs Manager added: “As a rural energy provider, we understand that country living can be challenging and access to community facilities can be especially difficult.

“We set up the Calor Rural Community Fund to be able to give something back to these rural communities, and this year we were inundated by a number of deserving projects. We’re delighted to award Mount Hawke Academy with £2,500 to help fund the new adventure playground, and we look forward to seeing the finished result.
