Sunday afternoons are made for lazing in a cosy pub, beer in hand and an overflowing plate of delicious roast dinner on the table. We pick twelve of our favourite places for Sunday lunch in Cheltenham
1. The Clarence Social, Clarence Social
If you fancy your Sunday lunch in a charming setting, look no further than Cheltenham's much-loved weekend drinking spot. Opt for roast Cotswold beef, Chicken Supreme with apricot thyme stuffing or Clarence Social's guest roast served with duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal greens, cauliflower leek cheese and a Yorkshire pudding. The puddings here are also delicious but we're usually too full to order one!
2. The Beehive, Montpellier Villas
Sunday lunch is a casual affair at this much-loved community pub with the choice to dine in the main bar, snug or the small courtyard at the back (weather permitting). Fill up on roasted meats, crispy potatoes and all the trimmings, and try to leave room for one of their excellent desserts. If you're an ale lover, you're in for a treat at The Beehive as they have a fantastic selection of every-changing ales, including some local favourites.
3. The Kemble, Fairview Street
It may be tucked away on Fairview Street but you'll be hard-pressed to find a table for Sunday lunch at The Kemble - we recommend booking in advance. The roast dinners are fuss-free and proper 'home-from-home' style with generous helpings of meat, homemade roasties, cauliflower cheese, veggies and all the trimmings. Vegetarians can opt for the nut roast. Over the summer, the traditional roast is swapped in favour of a Mediterranean style feast.
4. The County Kitchen, Grovesnor Street
Well known for their delicious weekend brunches, including their freshly baked Belgian waffles, the County Kitchen also rustle up a top-notch Sunday lunch. Choose from beef, chicken, lamb, pork belly or vegetarian lasagne served with all the tasty trimmings. You'll find the café-cum-restaurant tucked away on a small street near the top of the High Street.
5. The Daffodil, Suffolk Parade
If a decadent and booze-laden three-course affair is what you're after this Sunday - make The Daffodil your destination for roast dinner. Alongside your starter, main and dessert enjoy bottomless Prosecco, white wine or red wine, for two hours, all for £35. We highly recommend the tasty twice baked Double Gloucester soufflé for starters.
6. The Strand, High Street
Sitting at the top of Cheltenham's busy High Street, The Strand is a perfect pit-stop for a traditional roast dinner after a Sunday shopping trip. Similarly to their pub lunches, all the food is freshly prepared by their talented chefs and the kitchen is open 12-5pm on Sundays.
7. The Ox, Cambray Place
Steak lovers of Gloucestershire will already have The Ox on their radar but did you know they do roast dinners too? Every Sunday, expect a choice of roasted meats - including Buxton's dry aged rump of beef - with roast potatoes, leeks and greens, roast carrots, cauliflower cheese and house gravy served in the lavish décor of the restaurant up until 4pm.
8. Fire Station, St James' Square
One of our favourite bars for a night time tipple in Cheltenham, the Fire Station also boasts an extensive menu of all day dining. On a Sunday, from 12-5pm, you have a choice of pork shoulder, Aberdeen Angus sirloin, roast chicken supreme or sweet potato & lentil pithivier, complete with all the trimmings. You can also add bottomless prosecco to you roast dinner - go on, it's still the weekend after all!
9. House in the Tree, Boddington
The House in the Tree is a big hit for families: the staff are friendly and welcoming, there's an extensive menu to suit all tastes and there's a play area and petting zoo - yes, a petting zoo - behind the pub. On a Sunday, you'll be a lucky to find a table as their roast dinners are extremely popular. Generous helpings of roasted meats are served with moreish roasties, vegetables and plenty of gravy.
10. Chez Mal Brasserie at Malmaison, Bayshill Road
Sunday lunch is an extravagant affair at Malmaison's Chez Mal Brasserie but with a reasonable price tag. For £19.95, diners can enjoy a selection of unlimited appetisers from the Chef's Table and soup of the day, followed by roast beef sirloin, pork belly or a main dish. For added decadence, enjoy unlimited prosecco for £15 per person.
11. The Exmouth, Bath Road
Sitting along Bath Road, The Exmouth is one of those all rounder pubs. You're likely to find people enjoying coffee and cake catch-ups in the morning right though to late night drinking sessions in the pub's huge beer garden. On a Sunday, roast dinner is the name of game. Choose from one of at least three meats available, including the famous slow cooked lamb, alongside huge Yorkshire puddings, roasties and plenty of veggies.
12. The Langton, London Road
While away a Sunday afternoon in the stylish surroundings of The Langton, a stone's throw from the town centre. Decide between a range of roasted meats or a nut roast - or even a Trio of Roasted Meats - complete with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, fresh seasonal vegetables and plenty of gravy. Not in the mood for a full-blown roast? There are plenty of lighter options and sharer plates to choose from.
