A life in and around the sea is a no-brainer for the co-founder and director of Salcombe Distilling Co

Tell us briefly about yourself and what you do in the county.

I have always loved Devon; I adored my childhood summer holidays in Salcombe every year and was thrilled when we subsequently moved there, drawn by our passion for sailing, the dramatic beautiful coastline and nearby rugged moors. Much later, in 2016, I launched Salcombe Distilling Co with my friend and fellow sailing instructor (from our early years!) Angus; we are now following our dream of having a Salcombe-based business in the drinks industry where we make Salcombe Gin, Salcombe Rum and our non-alcoholic New London Light spirits.

Where in Devon do you live?

My family lived in Salcombe for many years but I now live in Exmouth where I really like the balance of being on the coast yet so close to the city of Exeter (and the Chiefs!).

How long have you been here and what brought you here?

Almost 20 years, my wife grew up in East Devon and both of our families live here so this combined with our passion for any activity on, in or by the sea made it a no-brainer to bring up our children here.

What's the best thing about living in Devon?

The beautiful coastline and all the activities that go with it: sailing, surfing, swimming and scenic walks. These combine to give an outstanding quality of life where you spend lots of time outdoors enjoying all there is to offer.

And the worst?

The only possible negative I can think of is sometimes having to travel long distances away to visit friends and family elsewhere in the UK.

Describe your ideal day out in Devon

Getting out on the water kitesurfing on a windy day, whatever the weather, with friends and family all out having fun, followed up by a lunchtime pasty at the Hang Time Café in Exmouth whilst watching all the watersports action on the seafront. Then a family walk along the coast in the afternoon followed by an evening drink and meal in one of the many lovely pubs or restaurants.

What is your favourite Devon journey, by any mode of transport?

Totnes to Dartmouth by paddleboard, especially as part of the annual Head of the Dart competition. Simply stunning scenery, surrounded by people having fun, looking forward to the view of Dartmouth with the Royal Naval College perched above as you complete the course and then celebrating your accomplishment with a Salcombe Gin & Tonic of course.

What is your favourite view in the county?

Looking up the Salcombe estuary from the National Trust Overbecks Garden at Sharpitor; a glorious view and when framed by the amazing tropical plants that grow there, it is absolutely world class.

What is your favourite month to be in Devon?

June. The long, warm (mostly!) days where you bask in the knowledge that summer has only just begun and every evening there is a sunset and a sundowner drink to be enjoyed.

What gift from Devon would you give to a friend?

Salcombe Gin of course! But seriously, I do, along with other outstanding goods that are made in our county; cheese, wine, chocolate, cider, artwork and handmade accessories - so much to choose from.

What three words best describe Devon?

For me, it’s: Perfect Coastal Life
