Earlier detection opens the door to prevention and support for dementia. At Exeter, this insight has shaped a research programme.
Leading the way in new approaches to dementia, researchers at Exeter are transforming how the condition is understood, prevented, and cared for. From early intervention to improving daily support, their work opens up new possibilities for people living with dementia. Through innovative, forward-thinking research, Exeter is helping to deepen understanding and enhance lives across the globe.
New body copy: Dementia research depends on long-term medical studies, patient participation, and the commitment to understanding change over time. It is one of the fields where sustained support makes a difference. Challenging the assumption that dementia is an inevitable part of ageing, researchers now understand that the risk of dementia develops gradually over a lifetime and that earlier detection creates opportunities for prevention, planning, and support.

At Exeter, this understanding has shaped a research programme. Longitudinal studies, early detection technologies, and prevention research are working together to transform the future. Gifts in Wills play a vital role in making this work possible, helping to drive breakthroughs that improve prevention, care, and treatment for generations to come.
“Because we know things can be getting better and better over the years, it does give me a bit of hope.” Marilyn featured in our Protecting Minds campaign film following a recent dementia diagnosis.
Some of the most important breakthroughs in dementia research only emerge over time. By leaving a gift in your Will, you can help make this vital work possible. A legacy gift is a way to invest in a future where fewer families face dementia, and more people benefit from earlier insight and support.
