This once hugely popular tourist destination may be quieter than in its Victorian glory days, but it still knows how to entertain, with plenty to offer visitors.

What to see and do:

Hang out in the harbour

The harbour is the place to go to catch one of the many boat and fishing trips that set off from here. It’s a busy area, with lots of activity going on and fish and chips on the harbour wall, or a pint in the pub is a must. Walk up the little hill to St Nicholas Chapel, an old medieval lookout point.

Family fun

Discover North Devon’s underwater world at Ilfracombe Aquarium, based in the old lifeboat house. It reveals a fascinating journey from Exmoor stream to the ocean and has around 75 local aquatic species. Just outside town is Watermouth Castle which has rides, a maze, imaginative play areas, a fairy world, all set in a beautiful valley garden – the castle itself is home to an extraordinary collection of animatronics and museum items.

An arty town

The Landmark Theatre has a packed programme of shows and activities. Ilfracombe is home to many artists and makers and a number of galleries too, including Magenta Fine Art which specialises in contemporary art from UK and international artists. Don’t miss Damien Hirst’s Verity on the harbour.

Island adventure

Take the MS Oldenburg across to Lundy island. This wildlife haven is just three miles long and half a mile wide and you can go for day trips or stay in one of its self-catering properties.

Eat and stay

You’ve lots of options around town. The Antidote Restaurant offers Michelin-rated modern British food – they also have lovely accommodation if you want to stay over. You could go for a seafood platter, fresh off the boats at S&P fish shop on the harbour. 11 The Quay is a lovely wine bar and there’s fabulous Spanish small plates at the Terrace Tapas and Wine bar. Stay at The Carlton, a Victorian building with contemporary comfort. The Collingdale Guest House is renowned for its breakfasts. And why not stay in a castle? Watermouth Castle has seven rather lovely self-catering apartments.

And another thing

Ilfracombe has a very impressive museum, which houses weird and wonderful collections, many of which came from Victorian collectors who lived in the town. And it’s dog friendly too. .
