Add a flowery touch to your hair on your big day and you’re sure to look blooming. Here are 10 top tips from wedding expert Vicki Lord
Seasonal flowers have been seen on the Paris Haute Couture catwalks this year, with the most memorable look being Naomi Campbell dressed as a big bouquet by Jean Paul Gaultier during the wedding parade finale.
And when the top designers are doing it, it isn’t long before it filters down to the high street, and of course to brides too.
Walking down the aisle can be more like walking down the runway if you choose to go for this on-trend floral look – but you don’t have to go over the top.
Instead, here are 10 tips on how you can add the perfect touch of Parisian style to your summer wedding by wearing your favourite flowers in your hair.
1 Use flowers that are fully bloomed, ensuring you discard open leaves, so that the flowers sit better when secured close to the head. If flowers are only partially open they tend to protrude awkwardly out of the hair.
2 Ask your florist to ensure that all the flowers have long wired stems as opposed to short ones, so that they can be secured safely and comfortably with grips or pins.
3 Flowers attached to a comb can be quite heavy, and awkward too, as the clip can easily slip out of place, especially if you wear your hair in a loose, boho-chic style, with small sections clipped up on the sides. Instead, use lightweight fresh flowers. Flower-combs are better when placed into a hair-up style, as the comb can be pushed in securely
4 If you opt for a hair-up style you can get away with wearing more flowers, as there is structure to work the flowers into, grips can be covered, and more fixing spray is used.
5 With fishtail plaits or intricate styles, carefully placed simple flowers look best, so the detail of the hair can shine. A large statement flower also sets this style off perfectly.
6 A loose, wavy hairstyle looks effective with a wreath of flowers; go for bright colours for a festival feel, or for wild flowers with more greens and natural shades for a fantasy fairy look.
7 Ensure you have several spare flowers prepared, as fresh flowers may break while fixing into your hairstyle.
8 While working with flowers keep them on a damp tissue in a cool place; this will ensure they stay pretty and fresh until you are ready to use them. You can opt for satin or silk flowers, but fresh are stunning, and they can be dried after the wedding as a memento from your special day.
9 If you plan to have a very flowery hairstyle, you may decide against a bouquet, instead you can opt for a subtle flower on your wrist.
10 It is vital that your flowers are consistent with your overall image and theme of your wedding day. Choose complimentary colours and blooms for your bouquet, table decorations and the groom’s pin.
