There’s a certain kind of magic that comes from putting on a vintage dress and wondering at its story. Who wore it before you and what occasions has it witnessed? Here in Somerset we have plenty of options when it comes to discovering unique vintage treasures.

Just think of all those memories are woven into the fabric and thread, and the opportunity for you to create new ones by giving that item a second (or maybe third, or fourth) life. You can find one-off things that no one else has. Not to mention the environmental boxes that are ticked by dressing in preloved items rather than fast fashion.

Here are a few of my favourite vintage spots.

Zoe Ford, owner of Swan Vintage has the most wonderful eye when it comes to selecting wearable vintage pieces that mix and match easily into a modern wardrobe.

The Dandy Lion, Catherine Hill, Frome.

The Dandy Lion celebrated 16 years of trading on Catherine Hill and it’s no surprise to see why the shop is such a success. Selling a great mix of both menswear and womenswear in a setting that feels colourful and inviting, this is a place to come for a proper rummage. You’re certain to find something special.

Just up the hill in Poot you can find handmade and repurposed pieces made by local designers, as well as a good selection of vintage pieces.

Technically vintage-inspired rather than actual vintage, this shop is still worth a mention for being a destination for femme fatale dresses reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s.

The Yellow Shop, Walcott Street, Bath.

This shop is an absolute ray of sunshine for lovers of 90s fashion and all things retro.

Lark Vintage, White Row Farm, Beckington.

Housed in a barn next to White Row Farm shop, you couldn’t feel further from the farm when you step through the door of Lark Vintage. A glittery disco ball sends twinkling lights around the room filled with gorgeous antique homewares and very special vintage dresses.

Top Notch Vintage, Somerton.

A go-to destination for really special pieces, including designers like Chanel, YSL and Hermes. The shop is open by appointment and everything is available to shop via their website too.

As well as bricks-and-mortar shops, there are several regular vintage markets in Somerset that are worth having on your radar.

1. Vintage Somerset Fair, Wells.

Held a few times a year at Wells Town Hall, the Vintage Somerset Fairs host traders of vintage clothing and accessories as well as records, furniture and gifts. The next fair is on March 25.

2. The Vintage Bazaar, Cheese and Grain, Frome.

Showcasing a mix of clothing, textiles and brocante, The Vintage Bazaar runs both in person at the Cheese and Grain in Frome as well as online via a regular virtual market on Instagram. The next Vintage Bazaar live is on April 25, 9am-2pm.

3. Castle Cary Vintage Market.

This little market has been going for five years and as well as all sorts of vintage homewares and antiques you will find a selection of vintage clothing.

4. Frome Independent.

As well as indie businesses and food stands, there are a number of vintage stands to be found down by the Cheese and Grain as part of the Frome Independent on the first Sunday of the month.
