Happiness and opportunity are at the heart of Brighton and Hove High School GDST

The Independent Schools’ Inspection Report highlighted the fact that BHHS ‘ is highly successful in meeting its aims to provide a high quality, broadly based education for girls in a happy, stimulating and safe environment, supported by a strong pastoral system. From the EYFS onwards pupils of all ages and abilities show good achievement in both curricular and extra-curricular activities such as dance, music, drama and netball. The standard of artwork displayed around the school is exceptional in quality’.

Our Senior School pupils consistently gain excellent GCSE and A level results, and the hard work and enthusiasm shown by each member of the school contributes to the all round successes of BHHS. As part of the Girl’s Day School Trust, BHHS belongs to one of the UK’s largest networks of schools. A GDST education has long been recognised by UK employers and universities as a mark of quality, and with increasing international links our global reputation is growing.

In the coming months the BHHS pupils will be sharing their achievements with their peers, their parents and friends and visitors to the school. At the end of January over 200 girls from the age of 7 to 18 will be performing in their annual dance show at the newly refurbished Old Market in Hove. This year, the girls’ dedication was rewarded with excellent GCSE and A2 dance results and the admission to Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance of one of our talented dancers.

In May, the school will once again become part of the Artists’ Open House Trail during the Brighton Festival. Our A level Art and Photography will be on show as well as entries to the annual Photography and Art Competition that is open to everyone from year 6 upwards – the competition is also open to pupils in our feeder schools. This is an invaluable opportunity for the local community to view the excellent work produced by pupils.

The music department goes from strength to strength with performances from all years of the school, in choirs, orchestras, bands, musical theatre, and concerts. Our dedicated full time and peripatetic music staff ensure that all girls have opportunities to sample a wide range of musical styles both within curriculum time and as part of our extensive extra-curricular programme. The quality of music making in the school is recognised throughout Brighton and the surrounding area and the Senior Choir and Senior Instrumental Ensembles, in particular, are regularly booked for outside engagements. Music scholarships and exhibitions are available to talented and committed musicians in years 7 and 12.

Our PE department is a very busy place – with an extensive list of fixtures with local schools and with schools throughout the country in the Girls Day School Trust rallies. There is also healthy rivalry within the House system with a programme of inter house competitions from netball and football in the winter to tennis and athletics in the summer. In February a party of 50 Senior School girls are skiing in the Austrian Alps, one of many International trips that are on offer to the girls of BHHS. Last summer a group of sixth form girls took part in a ‘World Challenge’ expedition to Morocco, providing them with adventure and an excellent opportunity for team building in an unfamiliar environment.
