Brighton-based Float Glass Design has established an enviable reputation among designers, architects and home owners for producing remarkable textured, coloured, painted and gilded glass.
Stained glass artist Michael Johansson’s first exhibition was in his native Vancouver, at age 25. The exhibition’s success convinced Michael that he had the creative flair to build a career in glass, and he set off for London to make his fortune.Michael’s fashion designer wife Jane studied at St Martin’s College of Art before spending three years working in Paris. Working from her studio in Clapham, Jane noticed a young, attractive Canadian glass designer at a studio nearby. Cupid soon played his part, creating a dynamic partnership of glass and fashion. When the couple’s first son arrived, they left London for Brighton in search of a more family oriented lifestyle with a creative and artistic atmosphere. David Pincus, a seasoned glass works specialist with relevant business experience, joined the duo to progress the obvious opportunity – to set up their own architectural glass business. Thus, Float Glass Design was born. “The early years were tough but the three of us were committed to the business and passionate about creating stunning glass installations for amazing projects. It is highly rewarding because we love what we do,” says Jane.Now, seven years on, Float Glass Design has designed and produced highly creative and incredibly beautiful bespoke products for a huge range of clients. The craftsmanship and skill involved is evident in the quality of the finished design, with a diverse range of products, from doors, shower enclosures, feature windows, wall art and glass balustrades, among others. Each piece is designed and created to the client’s brief and made by hand at their Brighton studio. “It is important to get the feel for a person's personality and taste, and a feel for the environment in which the glass will reside. That’s why, where possible, we always visit the property or meet the client on site.” says Jane.
