A fundraising ball held at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne, raised a staggering �35,000 in aid of East Sussex cancer charity Charlie’s Challenge. TV’s Bargain Hunt and Flog it! auctioneer James Braxton entertained 170 guests. Sussex’s own international bestselling crime author Peter James donated a quirky auction prize: the opportunity to be written into his forthcoming novel, provisionally titled Dead Man Laughing.Ball organiser and trustee, Victoria Burrough, said: “We have wonderfully loyal friends of the charity in Sussex who never cease to amaze us with their generosity and support. We are thrilled to have raised such a lot for much needed brain tumour research.” Charlie’s Challenge was established in 1993 after Charlie Boutwood, then aged 20 months, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Having had an emergency eight hour operation which was only able to remove 3/4 of the tumour, he endured a testing year of intense chemotherapy followed by 6 weeks of radiotherapy which meant a general anaesthetic every day. Against the odds he made a remarkable recovery and is now enjoying life to the full.
