Yorkshire Life Champagne Lunch, Downcliffe House Hotel, Filey. A short stroll along the sea front at Filey was the perfect start to an exceptional summer lunch

There was no mistaking the pleasure the owners of Downcliffe House Hotel had in greeting their guests arriving for this Yorkshire Life lunch, a stone's throw from the beach at Filey. Darren and Lizzie Booth love entertaining and they also had much to celebrate after completing the hotel's 1m refurbishment programme.

Guests sipped Pol Roger champagne in the bar and on the sunny steps of the award winning boutique hotel looking out on to a calm sea before taking their seats in the restaurant. But the views were not lost. The big windows in the fresh, newly styled room, which can serve up to 50 people, look out on to the coast.

It was no surprise that the day's menu offered fine seafood beautifully prepared and presented by a relatively young kitchen team led by head chef Georgina Welburn. Filey crab cakes served with rocket and sweet chilli sauce was a clear favourite. This was followed by succulent pan fried Red Emperor on a smooth seafood risotto. The simple menu was perfectly rounded off with a light summer berry mille feuille and lemon curd.

'I love people and being front of house,' said Darren returning to his seat after one of a few tours of the tables getting to know the guests and ensuring everyone had everything they needed. 'And I love this building.'
