Five Yorkshire pubs have been named in the prestigious Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list. The Star Inn at Harome, the highest in the county, was named at number 8, seeing a welcome return to the list following the fire that devastated the Michelin starred dining destination in November 2021.
Chef Andrew Pern also received a Special Recognition Award and his ability to bounce back from intense hardship following the fire, reopening the much-beloved pub which, with the expert work of chef director Stephen Smith, has continued to flourish.
‘This kind or recognition is absolutely amazing,’ Andrew says. ‘We came back after the fire and after Covid and this is a dream. IT’s not just me, though, this is just as much for the team as it is for me, I’m just the captain.
‘It’s fantastic after 28 years to still be getting these achievements – a wonderful thing.’
Also on the list were Michael Wignall’s The Angel at Hetton at number 13, Halifax’s Shibden Mill Inn at number 17, South Dalton’s The Pipe and Glass at number 28 and a new entry at number 38 for Tommy Bank’s The Abbey Inn at Byland.
The Top 50 Gastropubs list was announced at a special event at Lancashire’s Parker’s Arms, last year’s overall winner. Each year Estrella Damm's list, now in its 16th year, ranks the UK’s best gastropubs according to votes from more than 400 owners, food critics, and other industry experts - all of which means the list really is decided by the industry.
