A quiet corner of Kent will be turned into a swirling Indian Bazaar on Saturday, when the Krishna Indian restaurant brings a taste of Bollywood to the county.
There will be music, dance, scarves and spices – all the scents and sounds of a typical Indian street market – as the Krishna celebrates 20 years in business.
But the celebrations have a two-fold function. As well as bringing a flavour of India to the people of Kent, the day’s activities are raising funds to help the destitute street children of Calcutta.
Although she has lived most of her life in the UK, Liz has never forgotten her roots and regularly returns to India to visit family and friends.
Visitors to the restaurant on Saturday will not only be able to experience the sights and sounds of India - complete with music from Bollywood! - but know they are helping thousands of vulnerable children who roam the streets of her home town.
Two speciality tapas nights have already raised money for Future Hope, a charity which
provides shelter, medicine and education for some of the hundreds of children who roam the streets after fleeing the heaving slums.
Liz said: “I am fortunate to have a wonderful home, family and life, but many of the people in my homeland are not so lucky. My daughter Sheena saw this charity at work when she visited Calcutta last year and we decided we would raise money for them as part of our anniversary celebrations.”
Krishna has become a focal point of the Headcorn community in the past 20 years and Liz has already held a series of fund-raising party nights for her customers.
However, the festivities conclude with a bang on Saturday when Bollywood hits town with a vengeance!
Visitors to the Indian Bazaar – who include the Mayor and Mayoress of Maidstone - will be able to see the chefs at work, sample traditional Indian dishes, discover the delights of henna painting - and purchase everything from scarves to spices!
Restaurant chefs Waquar Ahmed and Basanta Kumar will rustle up lunch before your very eyes and there will be fun for all the family.
The bazaar will be open from 11am to 4pm, with a variety of food and craft stalls and music and dance direct from Bollywood. Admission is �5, redeemable at any of the stalls.
Krishna – named after a playful Indian God - specialises in creating unique and quality cuisine, free from artificial colours or flavours. The restaurant also offers light and healthy options for those who like to keep an eye on their waistline.
