A new type of wool shop opened its doors in Tiverton last autumn - here's a sneak peak inside its doors
Tiverton's The Wool Merchant supply high quality fibres in a magnificent range of colours, weights and styles. Dawn, The Wool Merchant’s owner, wants to ‘bring the wool back to Tiverton’.
Tiverton owes its character and style to the once thriving wool trade. Prosperity and livelihoods were dependant on the Wool Merchants of previous centuries. ‘The Wool Merchant’ offer their customers a warm welcome and a relaxing atmosphere as well as space to enjoy the yarns and patterns.
The Wool Merchant provides a well-stocked shop with a range of designer yarns including Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Louisa Harding, Noro and Artesano. In addition to these they have traditional yarns from Jamison’s of Shetland with a wonderful palette of colours for Fair Isle and Shetland work and Donegal tweeds from Ireland. The Wool Merchant supports local and artisan spinners and producers such as Dodie Huxter, John Arbon, Ashill Alpacas and Blacker Yarns. For a treat, they have Jade Sapphire’s Mongolian cashmere or a selection of yarns from The Natural Dye Studio and for needlework a range of Mulberry Silks. For knitting and crochet tools they have a selection of Brittany, KnitPro and Addi.
The stock is updated every few weeks, most recently seeing the addition of a selection of lighter yarns in pastel shades and sizzling summer colours, with new ranges from Millamia and Lanamania of soft possum fibre. Branching out into new areas they also have on offer a range of felt making kits by Gilliangladrag Ltd, and some lovely rug hooking kits from Hooked by Design.
Questions are welcomed at The Wool Merchant - the experienced members of staff on-hand will help you work through any problems you may have.
Plans are in progress to open the basement, to give more space for spinning and weaving tools, and to expand into fleece, felt-making and embroidery, amongst other fibre crafts. This will also give them the freedom to have a knit together afternoon once a week and also to run courses and workshops at the shop.
