Going to the theatre is a Christmas tradition for many, whether that’s to see a family pantomime, Christmas carols or something classic such as the ballet. The Nutcracker has become synonymous with Christmas and holds a special place in people’s hearts, often marking the start of the festive period.
Northern Ballet has reimagined The Nutcracker in this magical tale filled with Christmas wonder. Choreographed by the Company’s former Artistic Director David Nixon CBE this is a production that will captivate those of all ages. Cast your mind back to the amazement you felt as a child at Christmas, when anything was possible, and everything felt like magic – this is what you will experience during Northern Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker.
Headed by the Company’s current Artistic Director Federico Bonelli, the tale has been brought to life by a cast of extraordinarily talented dancers that will have you mesmerised by their every move. Rachael Gilliespie plays Clara with such childlike enthusiasm that you can’t help but feel the joy she conveys throughout. A special mention must go to Saeka Shirai and her spellbinding Sugar Plum Fairy – we felt as though a spell had been cast over the audience every time she sprung onto the stage.
As you would expect, the glittering production is full of beautiful costumes that fully bring the tale to life. Designed by Charles Cusick Smith, the imaginative sets transport you to another world where you become completely lost in what’s happening before your eyes. We loved the playful humour injected into the tale, providing it with a charming feel - perfectly fitting for a northern production.
Of course, the music is the bow which ties this whole Christmas present of a production together. Orchestrator John Longstaff, Conductor Jonathan Lo and Leader Gordon Bragg are at the helm of the Northern Ballet’s Sinfonia playing Tchaikovsky's mesmerising music throughout the show. We found ourselves replaying the magic in our heads the whole way home.
If you’re looking to recapture the magic of Christmas, then this is just the ticket.
