Amey has been named as preferred bidder for Gloucestershire’s highway and transport services
Amey has been named as preferred bidder for Gloucestershire’s highway and transport services. The decision has been made by the council’s cabinet following a thorough and detailed evaluation of the bids. The contract will provide most highways services including road repairs and winter maintenance.
The current contract with Skanska ends in March 2014 so the council needed to find a supplier to work with going forward by agreeing a new five-year contract. Following a full tender it was Amey that offered taxpayers the most competitive price combined with the commitment to quality that the council demands.
Oxfordshire based Amey currently runs the street scene contract for Gloucester City Council and so has valuable experience of working in the county. The company are also running similar contracts in Birmingham, Hampshire and Sheffield.
The new contract is for an initial five years but could be extended up to 11 years in total, which means it’s worth between £130million and £450million overall. Discussions are now underway with the county’s highways team to ensure a smooth transition to the new contract which starts in April 2014. Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said: “The road network is a vitally important asset for our county which people care a great deal about.”
Mel Ewell, chief executive for Amey, said: “We are looking forward to further enhancing our services to the residents of Gloucestershire and will draw on our existing footprint in the local area along with our national highways experience to provide high quality, yet cost efficient services for the county. “We will work closely with the council to help deliver their vision of providing a safe and sustainable transport network.”
