The Kingston Wing is continuously increasing its range of treatments and surgeries, and now offers patients the opportunity to be treated by experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, husband and wife team, Paritosh Shah and Brinda Shah.

Both Paritosh Shah and Brinda Shah have been operating in Somerset and Dorset since 2014, and have a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise, using the latest techniques and equipment. They told Somerset Life everything you need to know about private cataract surgery.

Why choose cataract surgery?

Put simply, the purpose of cataract surgery is to improve vision. People usually decide to go ahead with the surgery if they feel cataracts are impacting their life by making everyday activities difficult, such as driving, reading, or watching TV.

Cataracts cause blurry, misty or less colourful vision, and if they're not removed, your vision is likely to worsen. Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy lens and is the only way to improve your eyesight. There are various factors that can increase your chances of developing cataracts such as eye injury, certain medications, diabetes and smoking.

Symptoms of cataracts

Cataracts most commonly affect adults as a result of ageing. There are many symptoms of cataracts to look out for such as double vision, objects looking blurry or cloudy, sensitivity to bright lights or sunlight, becoming increasingly reliant on glasses and contact lenses and requiring stronger prescriptions, or colours looking washed out, faded or having a yellow tint.

Benefits of cataract surgery

Cataract surgery can greatly improve a person's quality of life. It's a fairly straightforward and quick procedure; most patients are in surgery for just 20-30 minutes. After the surgery you should enjoy better focus, distinguish the difference between colours more easily, and be able to look into bright lights with less glare. Cataracts won't return after the surgery; the new lens will last a lifetime. Recovery after cataract surgery takes between two and six weeks in most cases.

Risks of cataract surgery

As with any type of surgery, there are some risks involved; however, complications are uncommon and most can be treated successfully. Whilst we only carry out surgery on adults there is no maximum age: we recently treated a 104 year old patient!
