Whilst working for Manchester-based accountants Beever & Struthers, Marcus Farmer noticed on numerous business audits that commercial companies were throwing all their waste in the same bin – and paying a fortune for the privilege.

This gave Marcus an idea

The idea was, that if you can get people to split their waste commodities such as paper, cardboard and other reusable items away from general rubbish, then there’s business to be made from their resale. With just £400 of his own cash, a Prince’s Trust Business Loan of £1,000 and a further £1,500 grant, Marcus bought his first company vehicle – an ex-BT van – in November 1994.

STE Waste was born

It’s now more than 20 years later, and we are still working to the same idea that Marcus hatched back in 1994.

From small beginnings…

When Marcus first started out in business, he found it hard to get businesses to change how they managed their waste. So, to start with, most of the work coming in to STE Waste was related to house clearances, with any items of interest being sold on for reuse.

Eventually, thanks to a rise in public awareness around recycling and the environment, coupled with new government legislation, the commercial market soon followed suit, and in 2002, Marcus bought his first trade waste and recycling truck.

In the years that followed, the business went from strength to strength, enjoying steady growth. 2008 saw the introduction of a new commercial shredding service, following a number of enquiries from local businesses. This opened up a brand new market and income stream for the company.

STE Waste Today

As of 2015, the company now has four front line waste trucks and two on site shredding trucks servicing Central Manchester, South Manchester and Cheshire.

As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, STE Waste will be revisiting our original roots of offering house clearances to domestic clients. The premises in Cheadle Hulme will be turned into a ‘point of interest upcycling area’, where we’ll be offering reclaimed and restored items for sale to the general public.
