The UK’s only food and film festival is celebrating its ninth birthday this month with a programme of screenings around Dorset, Somerset and Devon.
“These are unique occasions” a fan told me. “You get to see a great film, on a foodie theme, in the company of other film buffs – so much more fun than sitting at home in front of a DVD. Before and after the movie you catch up with your local food shopping, thanks to the pop-up farmshop and stalls.
“And in the intermission, enjoy Purbeck ice cream bought from an usherette. The basket she serves it from, by the way, was handmade from Somerset willow.”
• On 17 October Today’s Special (2009 feelgood comedy about an Indian chef who takes over his father’s restaurant in Queens, New York) will be showing at Milborne Port, near Sherborne.
• On 27 October Woman On Top (2000 romance starring Penelope Cruz as a Brazilian chef who goes to San Francisco and becomes a TV chef) will be showing at North Cadbury.
• On both occasions, look out for the Bartlett sisters’ Red Barn Farm Shop as well as Ruth Kimber’s meats and charcuterie.
• On 19 October Bagdad Café (1987 comedy drama about a German woman’s makeover of the most desolated motel on earth) will be showing at West Coker. On this occasion, the Goose Slade Farmshop will be open for business.
