A helping hand: 5 reasons why every family needs a nanny

From providing personalised childcare to helping around the home, there are many benefits of having a nanny
Let’s face it, being a parent isn’t easy. With school runs, activity clubs, meals and bedtime routines – not to mention trying to fit it all around a work schedule – it can feel as though there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done.
If you’re struggling with busy daily routines, a nanny could be the helping hand you need to achieve a better work-life balance and spend more quality time with your kids.
Eleanor Brogan, director of Cheshire-based childcare agency Our Tots Tribe, shares five reasons why you should consider hiring a nanny.
1) Personalised care
Unlike nurseries or after school clubs, nannies can provide one-to-one attention and personalised care for each child based on their individual needs. “Having that personal bond and sense of familiarity is important for a child’s development and happiness while giving them a chance to be away from mum and dad, especially if they suffer from attachment or separation anxiety,” says Eleanor.
2) A range of skills
- 1 20 of the best places to eat out in St Ives
- 2 8 of the best places for a bluebell walk in Surrey
- 3 17 of the best spots for al fresco dining in Essex
- 4 12 outdoor dining experiences in Surrey
- 5 Win a short break in London at The Dilly on Piccadilly
- 6 19 great places to eat outdoors in Cheshire after lockdown
- 7 35 great Surrey pubs with beer gardens and terraces
- 8 7 magical bluebell walks in Devon
- 9 Bluebell walks in Suffolk: Beautiful spring woodlands to explore
- 10 Bluebell woods in Derbyshire: Top 5 places to go for woodland walks
Most nannies are experienced childcare professionals with a range of skills which can be matched to your family’s needs, whether you’re looking for someone with SEN experience, first aid training or a maternity specialist. It’s also common for nannies of school age children to provide educational support, says Eleanor. “Our nannying services can be combined with professional tutoring for early years through to GCSEs, and we often work alongside schools to create interactive curriculum-based lessons, which can be done in person or online.”
3) Flexibility and convenience
Juggling family life with a job can be challenging, and unlike other childcare options, nannies are flexible and can work around your schedule. “Many nannies work on an ad hoc basis to help take the stress out of those busy morning and evening routines,” says Eleanor. “They can also provide babysitting services or even help take care of children on holiday,” she adds.
4) Help around the home
Another benefit of having a nanny is that they can help with household chores if agreed as part of their contract. “They can help with light housework, meal preparations and dog walking – basically anything that makes home life that little bit easier,” says Eleanor. Some nannies can also provide overnight care for families with babies who need help with feeding and bedtime routines.
5) Prevent sickness
In today’s current climate of social distancing, sending children to nurseries or after school clubs can be a worry for many parents. Having a nanny allows your children to remain in a safe environment and reduce their chance of getting sick. “The childcare comes to you, giving you peace of mind that your little ones will only be in contact with one person,” says Eleanor.
