Demolition has begun to enable the £500 million redevelopment of the Westgate Centre by Westgate Oxford Alliance, a joint venture between The Crown Estate and Land Securities.

As leasehold owners of the Westgate Centre, Westgate Oxford Alliance has signed a Development Agreement with Oxford City Council, which will remain owner of the freehold to the new development

The 800,000 sq ft retail-led mixed use development will have a 13,000 sq m flagship John Lewis as its anchor department store, and is due to open in late 2017.

The new Westgate will provide space for shops, restaurants, cafés and leisure uses including a boutique 5- screen Curzon Cinema, set in a mix of covered streets, arcades, lanes and squares.

Meanwhile a £6 million refurbishment of the Clarendon Shopping Centre in Oxford has been completed. The scheme involved the demolition of an existing ground floor store to make way for a large format three story H&M along with other retail units. Photovoltaic panels have been integrated into the roof lights to generate electricity and allow natural light to the top floor.
