This little fellow tipped the scales at just 66g when he was born at Chester Zoo. One of the first chicks of the year for the zoo’s colony of Humboldt penguins, he was christened Doctor. Why? Because zookeepers like to name each season’s chicks according to a theme. Last year it was British Olympic stars, this year Doctor Who. Tardis, Davros and Dalek followed swiftly on.

Each pair of the endangered South American penguins lays two eggs, incubating them for 40 days up to hatching. The parents are fed fish which they turn it into a high-protein soup, regurgitating it to feed the chicks.
