From pretty pub gardens to restaurants overlooking the ocean, Suffolk is a treasure-trove of wonderful places for al fresco dining. With that in mind we’ve picked nine of our favourite places to enjoy a meal in the sun

1. The Ramsholt Arms, Deben

This charming riverside pub, nestled on the banks of the Deben, is the perfect place to enjoy some fresh seafood whilst taking in the glorious views from the sun-soaked terrace. On the weekends during summer months they serve a traditional American barbeque and a wonderful selection of sharing platters which are ideal for a chilled evening with friends. As one of the only south facing pubs in the area, diners are able to experience beautiful sunsets making an evening spent here truly unforgettable.

2. The Alex Café Bar, Felixstowe

Set up on the ground floor and patio area of The Alex, the Café Bar enjoys seafront views facing out onto Felixstowe's south promenade. Its casual atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a few relaxed drinks - their fully stocked bar served a huge selection of wines, Adnams draught ales and even a few cocktails! The menu is simple; offering an 'All Day Breakfast' selection as well as café favourites such as wraps, nachos, sandwiches and Mac n Cheese.

3. The Ship at Dunwich, Dunwich

Set in the peace and quiet of the picturesque Dunwich village, and surrounded by a mixture of nature reserve, heathland and stunning beaches, The Ship at Dunwich is a hidden gem. It serves delicious home-cooked food such as classic fish and chips and free-range baked ham that can all be washed down with a pint of real ale. During the summer months nothing beats dining amongst the cluster of fruit trees in the spacious pub garden. And afterwards take in a stroll to the nearby beach just a few minutes away.

4. The Fludyers Hotel, Felixstowe

The Fludyers Hotel, set in an elegantly restored Edwardian building, has been entertaining guests since it was first built in 1903. Today, its stunning seaside location, contemporary décor and huge selection of real ales make it a wonderful pub/restaurant for al fresco dining. During summer months diners can find a seat on the heated summer terrace and tuck into classic British dishes with a modern twist.

5. Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Ipswich

This waterside eatery in Ipswich is renowned for its modern dining experience. The Salthouse Harbour Hotel serves delicious contemporary dishes using the very best local produce from independent producers. Sit back with the beautiful waterfront in view and discover the chic side of Ipswich. Make sure to visit on one of the hotel's regular 'Wine Nights' where they sample a plethora of fine wines, check their website for details.

6. Westleton Crown, Saxmundham

Tucked away on the Suffolk coast, you'll find The Westleton Crown situated between Southwold and Aldeburgh. It dates back to the 12th century and retains much of the charm and characteristics of that era with old beamed ceilings and rustic, exposed brick walls. Passionate about food, the team works hard to serve wonderfully tasty, hearty dishes. Whether it's a simple fish and chips or one of their finest a la carte meals, everything is prepared with the freshest local ingredients. On warmer days all of this can be enjoyed from the sun trapped terrace garden.

7. Brudenell Hotel Seafood & Grill Restaurant, Aldeburgh

8. Tuddenham Mill, Newmarket

Hidden away in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, Tuddenham Mill combines rustic historical architecture with modern, luxury décor. As an award winning restaurant, it is renowned for its passion for fabulous food. Working hard to source local produce the chefs have created a menu that is varied and thoughtful, making the most of the wonderful ingredients of the county. 9. The Table, Woodbridge

Since first opening its doors in 2012 it didn't take long for The Table to establish itself as the place to go for fantastic food in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The owners have worked hard to create a space that's homely and versatile, perfect for any occasion, from light lunches, romantic dates, family gatherings and even street food events.
