The Grosvenor Fish Bar has been a much-loved resident of Pottergate for over thirty years but is far from the average chippy. 27-29 Garden Street, Cromer
Don’t be fooled by the modest appearance of this little blue restaurant on the North Norfolk coast, because its classic fish and chips are not to be missed. The staff at Mary Jane’s have been serving the people of Cromer (and its many visitors) for over fifty years.
The place is a perfect example of the phrase ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, with delicious dishes that have stood the test of time. Take away and stroll along the beach or pier.

1 New Street, Cromer
Owned by renowned chef Galton Blackiston, No1 on Cromer’s seafront is comprised of an award-winning fish and chip shop and a seafood restaurant on the floor above. The chippy offers classic dishes such as haddock and chips or order something different such as a Cromer crab burger or tempura prawns and chips.
If there’s room for something sweet, try Ice Cromer next door, serving Norfolk ice cream (made with milk sourced from the nearby Lakenham Creamery) while enjoying a pretty sea view.
65 Dereham Road, Easton
The Rembrandt offers classic fish and chips but with a touch of class and is another local favourite that has built up a strong reputation due to its welcoming service and mouth-watering food.
Just off the A47, The Rembrandt makes a great place to stop off during your journey through the county. The website has a limited menu during the social distancing measures but many of the classics are covered for chippy traditionalists.
50 High Street, Sheringham
The Sheringham Trawler is a restaurant that really lives up to its name due to its cute and kitsch nautical décor and, more importantly, its wide selection of fish. There is something for everyone at the family friendly restaurant, with gluten-free options, homemade burgers and more.
The excellent customer service and tasty food has earned it rave reviews which means it can get busy.
Thornham and Holt
Voted one of the top 20 shops in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2018, Eric’s Fish and Chips, in the pretty north Norfolk villages of Thornham and more recently, Holt, serves beer battered fish and beef dripping chips alongside some inventive extras such as battered gherkin and halloumi and spinach arancini.
Eric’s is owned by Eric Snaith, head chef at Titchwell Manor who blends “nostalgia with a modern European menu influence”, all served in a stylish and modern shop. Check the website for updated social distancing measures and truncated menu.
10 The Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea
French’s Fish Shop is located on the pretty quay in Wells-next-the-Sea, so your plate of fish and chips comes with a view. Open for over 90 years, it has gained awards and accolades for its fresh battered fish and crispy chips. With attractive interiors inside, it’s a pleasure to sit in when it begins to drizzle or take away and enjoy the town.
For a decadent seaside treat, order some pineapple fritters or chicken fillets as a side for your fish and chips.
12 The Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea
Two doors down from French’s is Platten’s, serving fish and chips since 1966 with a varied menu of fresh chip shop options.
Due to social distancing measures, only the takeaway service is currently available, but the restaurant should be open for diners again soon.
2-4 Greevegate, Hunstanton
Fishers has been in business for around half a century, so must be doing something right! Offering crispy cod and chunky chips just a stone’s throw from the sands of Hunstanton beach, this traditional chippy has a restaurant as well as a takeaway and boasts that it uses organic Norfolk spuds to make its chips, and fries locally-sourced fish too.
The restaurant has tasteful interiors with colourful chairs and nods to the history of the shop and the town and an outdoor terrace that’s perfect to soak in sea views.
Beach Road, East Runton
A classic seaside fish and chip shop, Will’s have seasonal specials, make their own fishcakes and tartare sauce and throw in little extras like a slice of fresh lemon with your fish.
There’s a lovely little outdoor patio outside the shop for soaking in some sun while you tuck into your fish and chips.

17 The Green, Hunstanton
A new fryer in town, Henry’s opened last year in Hunstanton with the promise of bringing ‘posh’ to your plate. For a really posh experience, opt for the fizz and chips deal with a bottle of Prosecco to sip with your food.
The menu has the key chip shop favourites, cod, haddock and plaice alongside fresh-cut chips cooked in beef dripping (with vegetarian alternatives), and there are some homemade treats too, such as king prawn skewers in lemon, chilli and coriander, smoked mackerel pate and vegetarian halloumi skewers.
