Elveden Estate comprises 10,000 acres of farmland, growing crops including onions, potatoes and carrots. Under the close direction of Peter McBurnie, former head chef at Claridges, many products are created on-site. These products, amongst others from selected suppliers are on sale in Elveden’s courtyard shops and restaurant.

What home grown and local produce do you stock?

In terms of home grown produce, Elveden stocks carrots, potatoes and onions, grown directly on the farm. We produce a vast range of jams, chutneys and sauces using produce from the estate, and also offer Estate venison whenever in season, which are renowned locally for its quality.

We also offer lots of local produce, for instance; dairy products from local sources including milk, eggs, meat and cheese. We have close relationships with a number of local bakers, including Hyams of Brandon who supply freshly baked bread daily, The Wheaten Mill who make delicious cakes and Gilberts Galloping Chef who supply the shop with a wide selection of pastries including pork pies and sausage rolls.

Do you encourage local suppliers to support you?

We actively seek local producers to work with. We like to think that Elveden acts as a ‘food hub’ for other local suppliers looking to supply leading supermarkets and local restaurants. The food hub offers advice and support to new food ventures in getting their products listed with the supermarkets, as well as supporting established businesses with their supply chain.

On the subject of supermarkets, how competitive do you feel your prices are?

Elveden strives to offer the highest quality products at good prices. In many cases we are cheaper than the supermarkets, for example our meat is reasonably priced, but of excellent quality.

Could you tell us a bit more about your business?

Elveden Estate, in the Brecks region of East Anglia, is a 22,500-acre estate comprising 10,000 acres of farmland and producing many crops including onions, potatoes, parsnips and carrots plus cereal crops for British supermarkets. The estate offers a courtyard of shops, caf, woodland walk and horse course, which are all open to the public daily. The courtyard setting, which is perfect for Alfresco summer dining, includes a fine food farm shop and restaurant as well as a book shop, children’s gifts and home and garden shops. The farm shop boasts a wide selection of local meats, including Elveden’s own venison, local cheeses and other dairy products. Elveden is highly supportive of other local brands and stocks a plethora of products from Bhaji Man’s curries and Butterworth’s tea to Calvors lager and English Whisky. These products sit alongside Elveden’s own range of home-produced chutneys, sauces, marmalades and jams. In just one year, the company’s in-house development chef, Peter McBurnie has created a range of over 25 jarred products, including using the Estate’s own-grown produce and otherwise sourced locally, wherever possible. Elveden products include Elvedenilli, a new take on Piccalilli, which uses carrots, onions and parsnips in a sweet, finely-cut ‘illi’ and Elveden Pickle, which has a very high fruit content of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb, alongside the traditional vegetables, making the ideal accompaniment to strong cheeses. Recently the shop has been remodelled to include a ‘Sweet Shop’ section with all types of confectionery including traditional jarred sweets, cakes, hand-made chocolates and home produced fudge.

The Estate is located off the A11 at the B1106 crossroads. You can also buy a selected range online at www.elveden.com.
