The homemade tiramisu advertised in the window of Tiamos Continental Cafe was enough to persuade us to pop in for lunch on a very busy Saturday.

Fortunately, they found us a table at the back of the cafe which was referred to as Cosy 1 on the bill. Love it. Unfortunately home-made Tiramisu was off the menu.

While Cheshire is blessed with a rich diversity of restaurants and gastro pubs it is surprising to find that there are so few in Stockport. Tiamos is defiantly old school. Not retro chic just retro but the staff are terrific and the food is mostly lovely and home made.

We opted for a starter of three tapas for £6.95 - houmous, chickpea and spinach balls and chorizo followed by a Halloumi salad (£5.90) and a Lubia and salad (£6.95). They were delivered to our table all at the same time but this just dded to the continental nature of the feast.

The spinach balls were in effect falafel and both they and the houmous were fine if a little bit bland for my own personal taste. My Halloumi salad was fresh, the cheese salty and soft. The big hit was the Lubia a warming spicy pilaf dish which seems to be of Lebanese origin - the continental aspect of this place is nothing if not eclectic.

Another reason to love Tiamos is the tea menu. Proper leaf tea not a bag dangling in hot water. I opted for Russian Caravan (£2.50) from a well thought out list while the other half had a pot of Tiamos blend (£2.80), which is really unusual combining a tea taste with a hint of warming spice.

In the absence of Tiramisu we chose to share warm pecan pie (£2.90) with ice cream (£1.60) and a warm mince pie (£2.80). The latter with a sponge top and pastry bottom and bursting with citrus flavours and plump dried fruit. For £32.40 for two, lunch was quite the bargain.

I’ll most certainly be paying Tiamos cafe a call the next time I am in Stockport and not just because there are few places here like it - I want the chance to try that home made Tiramisu.
