The relatively new diversification project (the gelateria) at Barton Brook Dairy is tucked away down a Barton country road and home to a delicious 30 flavours of homemade gelato and three of sorbetto, made using quality ingredients and Italian flavours. Its ‘pure milk’ gelato is its signature flavour – using only their cows’ milk – and other flavours include oreo cookie, lotus biscoff and lemon meringue.
Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream, Ulverston
There’s nothing but praise for this on-farm freshly made ice cream with a massive range of flavours. Grab a scoop or two of its ever-changing flavours on a cone, in a milkshake or sitting atop a lovely hot waffle – and if that’s not enough, take a tub home.

Fredericks, Chorley
Fredericks award-wining recipes have been perfected over four generations of the same Italian Federici family, making luxury ice cream in the heart of Lancashire. And you’ll never be bored for flavour choice – there’s 120 flavours regularly in stock from the more basic vanilla to perhaps the more acquired taste of liquorice and bubble gum.
Milk Maids, Bolton
Family business Milk Maids is a hit with the locals. With a list of daily changing flavours and takeaway milkshakes, ice cream tubs and their very own Milk Maids Milk Buns (sweet buns, toasted with a scoop of ice cream in the centre and topped with icing sugar), there is always a reason to return.

Dubbed the best ice cream shop in Windermere and Hawkshead, The Little Ice Cream Shop handmakes more than 40 flavours of small batch, slow-churned gelato in its Hawkshead parlour and serves a growing band of loyal fans. Recommended no matter what the weather.
Wallings, Cockerham
Get ready for some serious queue-worthy ice cream. What started out simply as a barn hatch on the other side of the road, Wallings is now a lovely converted barn in the Lancashire countryside with everything from massive ice-cream cones topped with hot chocolate sauce to freshly made pancakes, waffles and handmade chocolates. A real treat.
