IT MIGHT have been a grey day but when workers got to grips with Elizabeth Hardy’s garden, her small corner of Bowdon was transformed into a riot of colour.

Earlier this year, Hale-based garden specialists, I Want Trees, launched a Guerrilla Garden Makeover campaign – a competition to find a green space in Trafford that would benefit from a makeover.

The winner was Bowdon resident Elizabeth Hardy who was nominated by her sister, Pauline Hall.

Elizabeth suffers from an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis and has recently had to give up her career working with children as her condition progressed. Pauline hoped transforming the garden into a serene haven would have a huge, positive impact on her sister’s life.

Elizabeth said: ‘I have always loved my garden however, I can no longer tend to it. My sister Pauline has made it as nice as she could for me. She was the one who entered me into the competition and it was a fantastic surprise when I found out I’d won.

‘I have always wanted an established garden that isn’t overlooked and that is exactly what I now have. It is absolutely gorgeous with lots of colour and evergreen so I am sure it will look as fabulous all year round.

‘The team worked unbelievably hard. I am completely overwhelmed by the transformation and so grateful to my sister and I Want Trees.’

The makeover included mature trees and holly bushes to give Elizabeth increased privacy to enjoy her new space as well as a huge variety of colourful, wildlife attracting plants.

I Want Trees’ Jessica Rowlands, Sales Manager and Guerrilla Garden judge, said: ‘Working on Elizabeth’s garden was an absolute joy. Seeing the delight the makeover brought was wonderful and we hope it will give her many happy memories for years to come.’

Elizabeth’s garden was selected from a shortlist of entries from across Trafford that included schools, public spaces and residential gardens.
