Your house is complete and now your attention’s turned to the exterior of your house, but where do you start?

We chat with Lee McDermott, director of Impact Gardens and Driveways Ltd who reveals 8 things to consider when creating the perfect garden and driveway for your home.

1. Think about where the sunlight is

This is such a big consideration that many people forget about. You need to analyse where the sun tends to sit in your garden at particular times throughout the day. If you predominantly use your garden for BBQs and hangouts with friends and family during the summer evenings, then the design needs to be revolved around where the sun will reach at that time.

If perhaps you’re an early riser and prefer to get your daily dose of sunshine in the morning and early afternoon, then the design can be catered to this. It’s all about what you’ll be utilising your garden for and how we can create a design that best suits your needs.

2. Are there varying levels to your space?

Many gardens and driveways can be set on uneven ground, which needs to be considered when drawing up the designs for the area. Do you have elderly parents or loved ones with a physical disability?

Thinking about access when tailoring the design is crucial so everyone can get the most out of your space.

3. How do I design a garden or driveway that works for my home?

Every home is different, which is why it’s important to get a bespoke design produced for each individual property. At Impact Gardens and Driveways Ltd, we have a team of experts who can do this for you to perfect everything down to the last detail.

We use 3D designs to help our clients visualise how their space will look, which also offers ample opportunity for any tweaks or amendments to ensure everyone is happy before we go ahead.

4. How can I improve my garden space?

There are so many things you can do to elevate your garden into something you’re proud of. We provide a combination of both soft and hard landscaping to create the perfect space. Our Gardens and Driveways division offer services including decking, patios and all forms of builds and soft landscaping. Our Grounds Maintenance teams can offer anything from planting to turfing and all aspects of garden and driveway maintenance.

For homes, there are certain sizes, shapes and restrictions that must be adhered to, but gardens provide the ideal canvas to get creative with very little boundaries within the privacy for your own home. And if it’s in keeping with the rest of the area, driveways are also a great space to utilise and characterise your home too.

5. How can I maintain and look after my garden better?

Keeping up with the maintenance of your garden space isn’t easy and requires a lot of time. We offer a maintenance service for our clients which involves jet washing, tree-trimming, hedge-trimming and lawn care, so you never have to worry about your garden again.

6. How can I budget to redo my garden?

It’s perfectly achievable to revamp your garden or outdoor space, no matter how much you’re looking to spend.

I’ve had a lot of experience estimating quotes for other companies and I wasn’t fond of how much clients were being charged for the service they were getting, which is why I created my own business. If the design we eventually create is too ambitious for your budget, don’t worry, we can always change some of the materials to better suit your financial needs.

Our team are always more than happy to provide information and tips on how to improve your garden and driveway under strict budgets. We have the expertise to create the best designs which can help you to put the most in your garden for your money.

7. How long does it take to revamp my garden or driveway?

If the job is bigger, we might factor in longer periods, but on average about three to four weeks. We will happily accommodate certain timeframes for clients if necessary; we have four landscapers on our team and will designate two or three to a job depending on the size to get it done smoothly within a good time frame.

8. You can get the garden designed but do the work yourself

Maybe you’re a DIY type of person, or you’re just trying to save some money, getting designs drawn up but carrying out the installation yourself is always an option.

We can provide a consultancy service, where we can create a bespoke design plan for your space and advise the client on how to carry out the design. There are no restrictive packages; we can create a bespoke plan and include different offerings to meet your needs.
