Dinner in the Nave, the first banquet to be held in Canterbury Cathedral for more than 600 years, was a wonderful way to thank donors and to raise much-needed additional funds for the ongoing £50m fundraising appeal. The nave was always a place for secular celebrations and this was a truly celebratory occasion, with guests who included The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willett, David Starkey, Amanda Cottrell and the actress Joanna Lumley. The candlelit dinner was in aid of the choir and music, and the choir, led by David Flood, entertained the audience throughout the evening. More than £60,000 was raised through an auction led by James Loudon, with prizes ranging from a weekend in Jerez to a gargoyle portrait of the winner's choice to be carved by the Canterbury stonemasons and attached to the Cathedral.
