Royal visit to Margate’s Turner Contemporary Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh gave the royal seal of approval to Margate’s Turner Contemporary on their first visit to the town in almost 20 years. This historic moment came after a hugely successful first seven months which has seen the gallery welcome more than 300,000 visitors. Her Majesty met with director Victoria Pomery, chair John Kampfner and guests including artist Tracey Emin, architect Sir David Chipperfield, and deputy director of The Tate, Alex Beard. The Royal couple also met the young winners of the recent Page Turner competition, whose works hang in the gallery, pupils from Northdown Primary School and Hartsdown Technology College who were involved in activities in the Clore Learning Studio. Before visiting the gallery, where she unveiled a commemorative plaque, Her Majesty was taken on a tour of nearby Margate Old Town, where 35 new businesses have opened in the last 18 months, stopping off at The Cup Cake Cafe and Blackbird.
