The year got off to a lively start when the TV programme ‘Our Dancing Town’ visited Barnsley, Skipton and Huddersfield in a bid to get the locals dancing. The show proved a hit on social media and was a celebration of the diversity in modern day Yorkshire.

On our website, readers shared their photos of snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils from across the county in our reader photo gallery, we look forward to seeing more of those in 2018.

Spring also saw the relaunch of the JORVIK Viking Centre after over a year of extensive renovations, costing millions of pounds.

The summer was filled with festivals and concerts, and of course we celebrated Yorkshire Day on August 1st. and the return of an old friend in Halifax.

Hull celebrated its status as the UK City of Culture throughout the year with a series of awe-inspiring events including a mass street art installation called ‘The Sea of Hull’, the Blade in Queen Victoria Square and the Weeping Poppies at the Hull Maritime Museum.

Autumn was award season for us, in September we hosted our annual Food and Drink Awards at Rudding Park and we also announced the winner of our Woodland Photography competition in partnership with Bettys and the National Trust; Harry Feather won top prize with his shot of Silsden.

In the tail end of the year we helped you celebrate festive fun across the county. We took a look at the ever popular Grassington Dickesian Festival and we explored why York has become one of the top destinations for Christmas in the country.
