The seaside resort of Minehead in West Somerset is often referred to as ‘The Gateway to Exmoor National Park’, due to its location between the wild landscape of Exmoor National Park and the sea.

The town is situated on the south bank of the Bristol Channel, 21 miles from f the County Town of Taunton. There are plenty of sports and leisure facilities on offer in Minehead, with a large population of tourists as well as local residents.


Things to do

You’ll find plenty to do in Minehead whether it’s relaxing on the beach, or something a bit more active. The town is a traditional seaside resort, with a long sandy beach and promenade, which attracts visitors from Somerset and beyond.

There are plenty of shops and amenities, cafes, bars and restaurants which will have you spoilt for choice. The picturesque harbour contains a number of fishing boats, and during the summer months, you can enjoy a pleasure boat cruise.

Just a stone’s throw away from the seafront is Blenheim Gardens, a beautiful park which is open year-round and hosts a variety of free entertainment events. The town also plays host to the annual Minehead and Exmoor Festival, a week-long classical music festival, which takes place at various locations across the town.


Sport & activities

If you prefer life a bit more fast-paced then you’ll find plenty of sporting activities and clubs to keep you occupied in Minehead. If you’re a hiker or rambler then you’ll find plenty of walking routes within Exmoor National Park.

The town of Minehead is also the starting point of the West Coast Path National Trail, the UK’s longest walking trail, which stretches all the way to Poole in Dorset. There are also a variety of sports clubs including rugby, cricket, bowls and golf at West Somerset Golf Club, which is Somerset’s oldest golf club. If you enjoy water sports, you’ll also find sailing, windsurfing and beach activities.

If you’re more of a spectator, then there’s still plenty to keep you occupied. Minehead has played host, on several occasions, to the Britain’s Strongest Man contest, and also hosts a variety of rally car and motorsport events.


Transport links

Minehead has its own rail link, with access to the West Somerset Railway; a heritage railway offering relaxing journeys throughout rural Somerset. The town is easily accessible by road, via the A39 and A396.

The cities of Bristol and Exeter are also within easy travelling distance, and as well as plenty of shopping and entertainment, each city also boasts an international airport. Living in Minehead offers the best of both worlds – a charming seaside resort, but with city life right on your doorstep.
