Cheshire designer Amanda Wakeley gives the lowdown on red carpet dressing for the party season
Amanda Wakeley is a name synonymous with red carpet affairs. For the past 25 years she has created a reputation around the art of dressing the A-list including those icons of royal style, Princess Diana and the Duchess of Cambridge... so who better to ask about looking fabulous for the party season?
The Cheshire born designer recently hosted at Harvey Nichols Manchester, in their luxurious Style Concierge suite where VIP guests enjoyed a drinks reception, followed by three course lunch with the designer
Amanda, from Mickle Trafford just outside Chester, showcased her AW15 range and offered guests style advice based on her new season collections.
We caught up with her afterwards to get her take on party dressing.
What should we consider when dressing for an occasion?
AW: Confidence and comfort is key! You’re on your feet having fun all night, whatever you wear needs to be fluid with your body, especially if you want to have a dance!
Do trends matter?
AW: My designs offer a lifestyle and aren’t necessarily trend-led. Luxury products are a commodity and I want to make sure that the Wakeley woman buys something elegant that allows her to feel confident and special, be it a key-ring to an embellished gown.
What are your favourite pieces in your new collection?
AW: The AW15 collection, in-store at Harvey Nichols Manchester, is inspired by the textural layering of the Mongolian nomadic tribes people. I especially love the mohair pieces, the way the textures blend from one fabric to the other is gorgeous.
What will get me fashion points for the season? Maxi length, short? Bright colours?
AW: Who needs fashion points! Details are key. Nobody else knows that your Amanda Wakeley jacket is beautifully lined with a little contrast trim on the piping but you do, and that makes you hold yourself a tiny bit differently and that is what is important!
Can you tell us what is your favourite outfit and why?
AW: It changes with every season!
What will you be wearing for parties over the festive season both formal and informal?
AW: For the party season, I always reach for a great tux jacket. You will always feel well dressed in a beautifully cut tux jacket whether over a pair of jeans or a jumpsuit.
I love a little black dress but how can I update it or re-invent it?
AW: Some statement jewellery and some belts can turn the volume up or down of a little black dress to suit the occasion.
What is your perfect Christmas day look?
AW: Christmas Day can be stressful for the Wakeley woman. My cashmere boyfriend jumper and a pair of jeans is the perfect combination as comfort is key on a day where you are entertaining at home.
Have you ever had a fashion disaster at an event or party?
AW: I haven’t had one of those, thankfully!
