Desperate to immerse himself in the beauty of his native Dorset, Nick Jackson left the capital and set up a business in Poole. Now he has gone a step further and created a fashion label inspired by his outdoor lifestyle

Having spent many years in London running a successful skate and footwear business, Nick Jackson decided it was time to return to his home town of Poole. In 2005 Nick established his company, Jackson Distribution Ltd, as the sole European distributor of several Californian skate and fashion brands.

But by 2011, keen to do his own thing, Nick decided to branch out and create Brakeburn, inspired by the way of life he and his team enjoyed on the coast in Dorset.

“There’s not one person in our team who doesn’t love the outdoors or make the most of where we live,” explains Joe Harrison, Brakeburn’s head of marketing. “We’re on the edge of the second largest natural harbour in the world, a stone’s throw from some of the UK’s best surf spots, and a short ride away from the Purbeck hills. A lot of us surf but we’re not a surf brand, most of us cycle but we’re not a cycling brand; Brakeburn is about our outdoor way of life in Dorset.”

Launched in spring 2013, a little over a year later Brakeburn is stocked across the county and also nationally at retailers such as Cotswold Outdoors, Countrywide, Mole Valley Farmers, Fenwicks and Next.

Joe explains that the brand philosophy was strongly influenced by the team’s active lifestyles. “We strive to never rest, whether it’s a dawn dip or surf before work, cycling to the office, or a weekend away in a tent. And because we’re passionate about being active the kit we make has a ‘built to be lived in’ quality.”
