Our bodies were designed to be active, but the 21st century with its modern machines and new gadgets encourage us not to be. We spend our days sat at desks, clicking a mouse and staring at screens. We might get up to make a cup of tea, but we are back down in that chair before long. Evenings are spent sat at home watching TV, or lying down in bed to flick through Facebook.
The human body is excellent at adjusting to the way we live our lives. The more we move, the better the body becomes at moving but as we spend more and more time sat down we begin to develop aches and stiffness. When we do sit, we don’t sit that well and our postures are often incorrect. We spend a lot of our time leaning forward, straining our necks, to look at a computer screen, or mobile phone. As a result, we are more prone to injuries, strains and pain from postural imbalances, as well as circulatory issues, obesity and bone density.
Our lives are also busier, more stressful, and we are time-poor. At CONTOUR we solve this issue in different ways by offering a variety of amazing classes: barre, reformer, dancilates and matwork classes. We also offer private classes on both reformer and the Cadillac.
Pilates is perfect for the modern day lifestyle because it can help to correct posture. It does this by strengthening the muscles around your vertebrae and stabilising your spine, to straighten you. With every exercise you do, you engage your core - your powerhouse - which supports your lower back and is connected to your pelvis and upper body.
At CONTOUR we give you a whole body workout, so as well as your core and your back; you will also be toning your arms, bum and legs.
The sessions are only 55 minutes long, which includes a warm up and warm down. The classes are efficient, and you will cover every major and minor muscle group in the time.
We all like to see changes happen quickly, and in Pilates results are fast as it tones the body, and helps make your muscles longer and leaner. But you have to be consistent.
Variety and versatility are important to us at CONTOUR. We have a number of different classes on offer that are taught by excellent instructors. The reformer class is fantastic and possibly one of the most versatile machines on the market today.
Pilates is a workout that focuses both the body and the mind and the sessions may help ease the stresses in your life. It requires a deep sense of concentration that encourages you to shut down your mind to any worries. Each movement is controlled by your breathing, calming your mind and allowing you to focus.

Why do different classes?
Reformer Pilates will give you a whole body workout and all over strengthening. All levels of fitness are welcome and if you’re feeling up for more challenging exercises you can change the spring tension to find a level that suits you.
If you have never done Pilates before, and you’re keen to familiarise yourself with the techniques before moving onto the machine, then you might want to try our matwork classes.
Or if you want to work up a bit of a sweat, and get your heart beating, barre, dancilates, or ReformHIIT, will all help you do that. There are a lot of repetitions to get you feeling that burn, and to get those muscles shaking!
Whichever class you choose, they will all give your body protection against our modern lifestyles, helping to prevent injuries, aches and pains. They will keep you fitter, stronger and more active for longer and because they put very little pressure on the joints, you can start them at any time in your life!
