The Spire Specialist Care Centre is continuing its rapid advancement of cancer treatment techniques with the roll out of stereotactic radiotherapy (also known as SABR or SBRT).

So what is stereotactic radiotherapy? In laymen’s terms, this treatment targets a smaller area around a tumour, avoiding more healthy tissues and organs; as demonstrated in the comparative images below of standard whole brain treatment versus stereotactic treatment of multiple brain metastases. This allows us to deliver a higher dose of radiotherapy over less treatment appointments.

Why is this so important?

Studies are showing:

? better treatment outcomes

? fewer side effects of treatment

Is this treatment for everyone?

Spire Healthcare has the ability to deliver stereotactic treatment to a range of body sites. These include:

This includes patients in both curative and palliative stages of disease, with the appropriate clinical indications.

Stereotactic radiotherapy is the latest addition in a series of technical developments that the specialist centre has rolled out, since opening in November 2015.

For the Sheldon Coopers of the world, they have even ensured the treatments can be monitored down to the nearest sub-millimetre, by using the latest technologies. This includes 4-Dimensional respiration and internal organ tracking, allowing monitoring of organ movement during treatment, all in an effort to increase the accuracy of dose delivery.

But it’s not all science and technology. Patients at the centre can expect calm surroundings, access to complementary therapies by Helen Rollason at the centre, free transport solutions, personal coordination of appointments and insurance as well as friendly service and refreshments.

Rapid referral pathways are standard for the Specialist centre – patients can be assured of minimal waiting time to commencing treatment. If your treatment includes chemotherapy, the centre also has its own dedicated chemotherapy wing, so everything is under one roof.

Ladies are well looked after as the centre has partnered with international charity, ‘Look Good Feel Better’ to offer a monthly workshop on site. There is also a specialist bra fitting clinic on site managed by ‘The Bra Consultancy’, which offers a bespoke service for patients dealing with post-surgical and treatment changes to find a comfortable, natural fit.

Future developments are in progress to expand the services available, but for now, thanks to a partnership with ‘The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity’, complementary therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy are available to everyone, whether you’re being treated by Spire Healthcare or being referred via Helen Rollason direct.
