Congratulations to Stockport Grammar’s GCSE pupils who opened their exam results to discover that all their hard work had paid off. The year group of 168 girls and boys have gained 90% of all grades at A* to B, with over 70% at A* and A.

A third of the year group have achieved a clean sweep of A* and A grades. 40% of the grades were A* and thirteen pupils have achieved the highest grade possible in all their subjects. Ten pupils who chose to take Further Maths have attained the highly coveted score of A* with Distinction.

Headmaster Andrew Chicken said “I am very pleased that the girls and boys have achieved such outstanding results. Their success is well deserved and it is a great pleasure to share this special day with them. I am sure that they will follow these achievements with many more.”

We caught up with some of the boys and girls as they celebrated their successes:

Jenny Kent felt “overwhelmed” by her 10 A*s. Alongside her studies she has also found time to play the clarinet in the school orchestras and bands, sing in the Chamber Choir, and take part in last year’s production of Oliver!. Sporty too, Jenny enjoys hockey and swimming and is a regular at the school climbing club. She said, “I have really enjoyed every minute at SGS so far and I’m lucky to have some amazing friends.” Jenny’s next step is A Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology as she pursues her ambition to study Medicine.

Henry Brearley is delighted with his 11A*s, including an A* with Distinction in Further Maths. He will take A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. Henry is an accomplished musician and singer, having performed at many school events.

Another talented musician, Alexandra Smith scored 9A*s and an A. With her sights already set on a career in family law, Alexandra will go on to study A Levels in Philosophy, Geography, English and French. As well as working hard at school, the bright pupil has also reached a high standard in violin, saxophone and piano, playing in the school orchestras and Stockport Youth Orchestra.

Anna Madden also has 9A*s and an A. Alongside being on the school hockey team, playing piano and “spending a lot of time horse-riding”, Anna has worked hard for her exams and is already planning a future in politics or international relations.

Twins Animit and Adit Kulkarni were both celebrating outstanding results. Animit gained 10 A*s including an A* with Distinction in Further Maths, and an A; while Adit achieved 11 A*s including an A* with Distinction in Further Maths. Animit would like to pursue a career in Chemical Engineering and plans to take Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level. Adit, who is interested in investment banking, will also take Maths and Further Maths but will combine this with Economics and German. Animit said he is “very happy and surprised” by how well he has done. Both boys are keen cricketers, playing for the school and for Marple Cricket Club.

After achieving 10 A*s and an A, Emily Dow has her sights set on studying Medicine abroad in either Germany or Denmark. She plans to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology and German at A level. A talented musician, Emily plays flute and cello and enjoys netball at school.

Budding film-maker Liza Vul gained 8A*S and 2As and feels “excited and more confident now that I have these grades” to embark on her A Levels in English, Economics, Philosophy and German. With an ambition to make documentary films, Liza is well on her way, having won a sought-after place on the BFI Film Academy at Cornerhouse earlier this year. The talented girl was one of just fifteen 16-19 year olds who were given the opportunity to make films with professionals as well as having lessons in film theory. Liza has already won prizes for some of her short films.

A Levels in German, Physics, Spanish and Geography are next for David Edgley, following his results of 2A*s, 7As and a B. David, who plans to study Languages further, wants to become a Languages Teacher.

Emily Banks paid special tribute to her Chemistry teacher, Dr Glarvey for being “really helpful”, and with 8A*s, an A and a B, she is looking forward to the Sixth Form, where she will take Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Geography. In addition to her academic success, Emily is a dedicated dancer having performed in “lots and lots” of musical theatre productions in Stockport and Tameside. She will appear in Seussical the Musical at Manchester’s Opera House at the end of September.

Faye Holleworth is “so happy” with her 9A*s and 2 As and says she is “ready for the challenge” of her chosen A Levels - Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Spanish. As well as working hard in her studies, Faye plays netball for the school team and also takes many dance classes in tap, ballet and modern.

Hamzah Niaz is “surprised and overwhelmed” by his 2A*s, 7As and 1B. Following A Levels in Geography, Biology, Chemistry and Maths he hopes to go on to study Medicine and said “the school has done really well to encourage me”. Outside the classroom, Hamzah is a member of the school’s Archery Club.

Ancient Greece has captured the imagination of Abigail Roskilly. She plans to follow her 9A*s and an A with A Levels in Maths, Classics, Physics and English before studying Archaeology at university. Whilst studying hard for her exams, Abigail has also found time for horse riding, climbing and running.
