Joanna Walker on how to be naturally beautiful and beautifully natural
There’s something about spring in the Cotswolds that feels like a deep exhale. The frost retreats, the fields glow with the yellow cheer of daffodils, and the hedgerows hum with renewed life. It’s the season of fresh starts – longer days, lighter coats, and a collective shake-off of winter’s heaviness.
As we tidy gardens and declutter homes, why not take the same approach with our skincare? A seasonal refresh can be just the thing to reset and revitalise body and mind. The shift in seasons is the perfect excuse to pause and check in with your routine. Winter may have left skin dry and sluggish, a little in need of TLC. Now is the time to reawaken it, to clear away what’s no longer serving us and nourish it with what it truly needs.
Refresh, rejuvenate, reset
Before diving into the practicalities, let’s start with intention. Spring is about renewal, so let’s bring that into our self-care. A simple ritual – five quiet minutes each morning or a long soak in the bath – can help reset our mindset as much as our skin.
A massage is one of my favourite ways to kickstart this transition. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of tension being smoothed away, the body reawakening after months of hunching against the cold. Whether it’s a professional treatment or an at-home session with a beautifully scented oil, this kind of care has benefits far beyond the skin.
Caring for yourself isn’t an indulgence; it’s a necessity. If you haven’t made time for it lately, let this be your sign to begin again. Looking after your skin isn’t just about appearance, it’s about how you feel in yourself. And as the seasons turn, a simple, mindful approach can make all the difference.
Out with the old, in with the glow
Let’s talk practicalities. Skin, like the earth, benefits from renewal. Here are my go-to ways to refresh and revive:
1. Gentle exfoliation: Think of this as clearing out the cobwebs. Dry brushing with a natural bristle brush boosts circulation, removes dead skin cells, and gives you an energised glow. Start once a week, working up to three times. It’s invigorating and uplifting – perfect for stepping into spring.
2. Hydrating polish: Swap out harsh scrubs for a sugar-based polish. Sugar draws moisture into the skin, making it an excellent option for keeping things supple and soft. It’s an effortless way to restore radiance and smoothness after winter’s dryness.
3. Nourishing body oils: There’s something deeply luxurious about applying oil to skin. It locks in moisture, boosts elasticity, and leaves skin feeling pampered. Apply head to toe, before bath or shower, then simply wash down with a jute mitt to remove dirt and dead skin cells whilst massaging the oil in – it’s a simple but effective way to nourish deeply without needing additional soap or shower gel.
4. Soothing oat treatments: A finely ground oat polish can work wonders if your skin feels particularly sensitive after the winter months. Oats calm irritation, relieve dryness, and cocoon the skin in softness. They’re a great choice for all ages and skin types, offering gentle, natural nourishment.
A ritual, not a routine
Spring cleaning your skincare doesn’t have to mean an overhaul – sometimes, it’s just about making space for the right things. The simplest acts, done with care and consistency, are the ones that make the most significant difference.
As the Cotswolds burst into life, let’s take a cue from nature. Shed the old, embrace the new, and welcome the season feeling refreshed, replenished, and ready for whatever’s ahead.
