There were surprises, celebrations, congratulations and camaraderie as hundreds gathered at Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa in Windermere to celebrate the best of Cumbria at this year’s Cumbria Life Awards.

The ceremony is a chance to recognise those who go above and beyond to make Cumbria a county that leads the rest when it comes to hospitality and tourism, celebrating all the best of Cumbria’s culture, produce and people.

Many worthy finalists from all across the county enjoyed a wonderful evening of laughter, emotion and pride, with the phrase ‘everyone here are winners’ being said by almost everyone who entered the stage, too.

The event was once again held in association with H&H Insurance Brokers, who are the headline sponsor of the Cumbria Life Awards.

The night was brought to a close with the Cumbrian of the Year Award, given to Richard Warren OBE. The audience gave a standing ovation as Richard, who is one of the longest standing operational team members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, made his way to the stage to accept the accolade with his wife, Carole, at his side.

His team members, John Hryb and Lee Tunstall, were there to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and commented: ‘Your dedication and impact on the community truly inspire us all. Well done, Richard.’

CUMBRIAN OF THE YEAR

Richard Warren OBE

Earlier this year, Richard, of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List with the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Mountain Rescue in Cumbria and the Lake District.

Richard is one of the longest standing operational team members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team with 40 years voluntary service. In his time, he has been Buildings Officer, Secretary, Press Officer and Drones Officer, as well as Chair of the team for many years.

Richard has devoted most of his spare time to mountain rescue in addition to activities at a regional level and beyond, having been Secretary and then Chair of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association & Mountain Rescue Association (LDSAMRA) from 1998 to 2024.

Throughout his service, Richard has been totally committed in his roles as WMRT and LDSAMRA press officers, delivering regular interviews with local and national radio, television, and newspapers, asking visitors to be mindful and consider the additional pressures placed on the emergency services and local mountain rescue teams. In particular, he has been instrumental in getting the message across to reduce the number of what he terms as avoidable accidents, by raising issues such as preparedness whenever he can.

Kirkby Lonsdale Fire Disaster Recovery Appeal Partnership

After a devastating fire in December 2024, Cumbria Community Foundation worked with Kirkby Lonsdale Business and Community Recovery Partnership and Westmorland & Furness Council to launch the Kirkby Lonsdale Fire Disaster Recovery Appeal to address hardship caused by the fire.

This collective effort played a vital role in helping to rebuild the area and support those affected by the disaster.

‘The fundraising efforts and subsequent distribution of hardship grants has only been possible thanks to an incredible team effort,’ commented one nominator. ‘Under very challenging circumstances, particularly during the lead up to Christmas, their commitment to supporting people affected by the devastating fire has been extraordinary.’

The Cottage in the Wood, Whinlatter

With so many excellent fine dining destinations in Cumbria, this category is always a popular one with voters. This year, the trophy was awarded to Jack and Beth Bond and the team at Cottage in the Wood. The establishment has consistently impressed guests with its creative menu, which showcases the finest locally sourced ingredients in an elegant and intimate setting.

Jack and Beth have only been at the helm of this much-lauded dining destination for not much more than a year, after taking over from previous owners, Liam and Kath Berney. T

The skilled pair and their talented team are flying putting foraged foods and a love of the land at the heart of the menus they create. Their efforts have already earned them a Michelin star – no small feat for a new team. Always hotly contended, this year’s best casual dining experience award goes to The Round.

Known for its welcoming ambiance and excellent service, this café has become a staple in the Arnside community, offering both locals and visitors a warm and friendly space to enjoy freshly prepared food and drinks.

Described by nominators as ‘a small place with a big heart’, some of its customers love this Arnside spot so much that they travel 40 miles every week for a taste of their coffee and artisan breakfast rolls. Visitors will also find pancakes and delicious granolas with cakes from three different local bakers – Northern Baked, Baldy Baker Steve Jones and Thyme Out.

Their commitment to local is vast through their use of local produce, as well as a commitment to community, raising £12,000 for the 4louis charity, which supports bereaved parents.

Captain Nelson Tavern, Maryport

This year’s Best Pub or Bar award, sponsored by Newsquest Media Group, was awarded to the Captain Nelson in Maryport. With its friendly atmosphere, excellent customer service and a menu that reflects the best of local produce, the tavern has earned a reputation as a community hub.

Following a long-held dream, Philip and Avril Routledge took on the Captain Nelson Tavern in November last year. A mainstay of Maryport’s community for decades, the couple have restored this popular community pub as locals remember it with a few modern touches – while keeping hold of the original bar, shaped like a ship’s wheelhouse as a nod to the town’s maritime heritage.

One customer says: ‘Avril and Phil brought an empty, unloved pub back to life. Maryport now have a wonderful place to meet and catch up with others – the community spirit is alive.’

Lovingly Artisan continues to go from strength to strength and is rapidly becoming a household name.

The innovative team is pushing boundaries with the creation of the Burneside mill, collaborating with the Taylor family on a mission to start growing grain and milling grain in Cumbria. The introduction of the mill is not just innovative but is helping to transform food security in Cumbria.

The bakery is also one of the most pioneering producers in the county. Working with ancient grains, and most recently introducing traditional bread crumbing techniques into bakes and bread.

The Independent Retailer of the Year award recognised a local retail business that has built a reputation for providing excellent customer service and a curated selection of high-quality products. This shop has become a beloved fixture in the local community, offering a unique shopping experience.

Brenda Warriner-Little took over W M Walker in August 2023 after working there since 2009. Since then, she has increased sales by 120 per cent and prides herself on exceptional customer care.

The business has made strides in designing its own pieces and sourcing beautiful gemstones as well as taking on a young member of staff who is bursting with new ideas.

Brenda, who is also co-chair for Cockermouth Chamber of Trade and enjoys encouraging people to visit the town, says, ‘We love our customers, and we love the shop, it’s very special.’

Shelley Knowles Hairdressing Ltd, Kendal

Shelley Knowles is a small independent salon established in 2005. Shelley was 19 and the youngest salon owner in the town. Today, the salon employs five stylists, rather than renting out chairs, to foster great team spirit and high standards.

Clients vary from children to the young at heart regulars who come each week for their shampoo and set. They also do styling for events, including weddings. As such, the Kendal-based establishment has built a loyal client base by offering personalised care in a relaxing and stylish setting.

Holker Hall & Gardens, Cark in Cartmel

Renowned for its historical significance, grand gardens and family-friendly atmosphere, Holker Hall attracts visitors from near and far, contributing to Cumbria’s popular tourism industry.

Home to the Cavendish Family for more than 200 years, visitors can see the county’s only closed and accessible herd of more than 500 deer as they drive through the deer park and spend time in 17 acres of gardens that house national collections of plants as well as the 400 year-old Great Lime – one of Britain’s top 50 most important trees.

Theatre by the Lake

At their home in Keswick, and across Cumbria, Theatre by the Lake produces and presents nationally acclaimed theatre, made with passion, that is seen by audiences from across the globe.

In its 25th anniversary year, 72,000 people came to see 380 performances over 67 shows and 187 volunteers donated 9,400 hours. Theatre by the Lake Productions toured to London, Ipswich, Bolton, Hull, Scarborough and Windsor and the world premiere of Steel toured to communities in Maryport, Workington, Egremont, Carlisle and Millom. 17 Cumbria artists were supported with opportunities to connect, develop and perform at CumbriaFest and 28 young people formed their new youth theatre, Company 25. And this is just scratching the surface.

Theatre by the Lake has long been a cultural cornerstone of Cumbria, which enriches the local arts scene and provides a platform for creative expression.

Eden Rivers Trust

Eden Rivers Trust is focused on preserving and enhancing the natural environment of the region and the project has made a significant impact on the local ecosystem, with efforts aimed at protecting the rivers and surrounding landscapes for future generations.

One volunteer commented, ‘Jenni works tirelessly as the volunteer coordinator to have as many enthusiastic people countered to help with water coke releases, tree planting, hedge planting, river restoring, allotmenteering and so many varied events to help our environment.

‘For her team, she keeps us all trained and busy with lots of tasks to keep us fulfilled. There’s always a role to be done and Jenni makes sure we all work hard to protect the rivers in the Eden catchment. She’s so wonderful and friendly and we all do everything we can for her.’
