Pictures from the Derbyshire Sports Awards 2010 held at the Roundhouse in Derby
Olympian Ellie Koyander scooped the top prize at the Derbyshire Sports Awards held at The Roundhouse in"Derby. The 19-year-old Freestyle Mogul skier from Tideswell – the youngest female member of the 2010 GB Olympic team at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver – was named University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year. Ellie’s father Peter received the trophy on her behalf from University of Derby Vice Chancellor Professor John Coyne. Ellie who was training in Colorado sent a message of thanks by video. ‘Winning this award means so much to me,’ she said. ‘It is really great to be recognised for my skiing and shows how far I have come. It has been an amazing year for me.’
The runner-up was Chesterfield’s Emma Wheeldon, currently the English, British, European and World Champion in Clay Pigeon Shooting DTL (Down the Line Trap Shooting). She is the only person in any discipline to hold all major titles in one year.
Jon Hall of Bolsover, won his third consecutive U of D Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award. Jon was part of the GB wheelchair basketball squad which won gold at the Paralympic World Cup in May and in the GB squad for the World Championships in Birmingham.
The Derby City Council Junior Sportsman of the Year award went to Belper gymnast Greg Townley, seven times British Tumbling Champion and silver medal winner at the World Age Group Tumbling Championships in Russia. Fourteen year old Quarndon snooker player Hannah Jones took the DCC Junior Sportswoman of the Year award for a second time after retaining her World Ladies Junior title for a third consecutive time. Maddie Thompson from Hope won the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award for the second time. The 15-year-old wheelchair basketball player was part of the GB Women’s team to compete in the Paralympic World Cup and World Championships, and is currently the youngest member of the team. Maddie was also a runner-up for the senior Disabled Sportsperson award.
Spondon’s retired badminton star Donna Kellogg was also present to receive a special Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to her by Jeff Gould who introduced her to the sport when she was a pupil at Borrow Wood Junior School. The guest speaker for the evening was former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper Bob Wilson. Born in Chesterfield of Scottish parents, Bob said he was proud of his Derbyshire roots and recalled a number of stories, including meeting the legendary Sir Stanley Matthews when Bob went for a trial at Stoke City.
