Repton, the historic former capital of the Anglo Saxon ‘Kingdom of Mercia’, is today a fusion of village and public school.

Steeped in history, this wonderful South Derbyshire village has one principal street, lined with a number of handsome Georgian houses and cottages which greatly aid the beautiful aesthetics of the village.

The Medieval cross on its imposing octagonal steps serves as a focal point on the road junction at the north end.

With its spiral decorated columns and vaulted roof, the crypt is one of England’s most precious survivals of Anglo Saxon architecture.

To the east of the church are the remains of Repton Priory, an Augustinian house founded in 1172. Its precinct wall and the arch of its 13th Century gatehouse are still important features of the village.

After the dissolution of the Monasteries, part of the priory buildings became the home of Repton School which was founded in 1557. Another part became Repton Hall, which is now also part of the School.

After a busy day spent exploring the village enjoy the excellent local gastropubs which always offer a warm welcome. And for lovers of real ale, The Boot has its own micro-brewery onsite, which is a definite entry on the ‘to do’ list – they even have beautifully appointed rooms, if you feel like staying over.

Nearby places to visit also include Mercia Marina – Europe’s largest inland water marina, National Trust Calke Abbey, Anchor Church and Foremark Reservoir.

Repton is a thriving village with a fascinating past, situated in the Trent valley between Derby and Burton-on-Trent amongst rolling hills and beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

On one side of the village is the Old Trent, the remnants of the former course of the river, on the other three is attractive rolling farmland. The village itself is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the county as far as architecture is concerned.

As well as its undeniable history which stretches way back, Repton is, of course, also famous for Repton School, founded in 1557 and one of the oldest, most prestigious public schools in the UK.

Many famous alumni have at one point or another called Repton home – from Olympic gold medallist Harold Abrahams, children’s author Roald Dahl, journalist and broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson and many more.

For locals, Repton has its own website (reptonvillage.org.uk) a community-focused site which focuses on all aspects of day-to-day village life.

Here you will find all the latest village news as well as information on both the Repton Village Society (an organisation that regularly arranges talks and trips on a wide range of subjects of interest to people living in Repton) and the Repton Village History Group, which has an archive of historical facts, many available through the website.
