Sport and business links of the highest quality return to Devon in 2016 as the Exeter Sporting Club re-launches with a very special guest speaker who found himself the main focus of British interest in the Rugby World Cup 2015.

Nigel Owens, the Welshman who refereed the Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham, is the very special guest speaker at a 6 Nations Rugby Dinner being held by the Exeter Sporting Club at Woodbury Park Golf and Country Club on Thursday, 17 March.

The dinner, which is being held in association with Devon Life, sees the return to the county of the sporting dinners organised by legendary former England and British Lions rugby player David Duckham.

David, whose Southern Sporting Clubs business organises events across the country, first started organising sporting dinners in the Exeter area in 1999. Now, after a brief hiatus, he is back with a bang – and a top evening’s entertainment is in store.

Nigel Owens, whose life story and commitment to rugby union refereeing are legendary, was the focus of much media attention during the Rugby World Cup and is also known as an entertaining and thought-provoking after dinner speaker.

David says: “Nigel is an extremely popular figure and an outstanding and superbly entertaining raconteur. I am delighted he will be the first speaker at the re-launch. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick things off again.

“The first openly gay man to referee at the highest level, he’s been on the International Panel for ten years and featured prominently in the recent Rugby World Cup. Furthermore, he received the highest honour of all when invited to referee the final.”

The evening will also feature a three-course meal plus entertainment from Jamie Sutherland, a former banker who has now turned his hand to stand-up comedy with his original and versatile act.

Andy Cooper, Editor of Devon Life, says: “We are delighted to be partnering with Exeter Sporting Club and have already secured our table at the event. I know from past experience what fantastic events David and his team put on.

“What better way to have fun and entertain guests on behalf of your business than to sign up for the first of what are bound to be many successful evenings here in Devon?”
