A much-loved British play exploring class, education and ambition is coming to Portland as theatre season gets under way.

The classic comedy-drama by Willy Russell will be staged at the Royal Manor Theatre in Fortuneswell from Monday, June 15 to Saturday, June 20, with performances each evening at 7.30pm.

First performed in 1980, Educating Rita has become one of the UK’s most popular and enduring stage plays.

It tells the story of Rita, a working-class hairdresser eager to better herself through education, and Frank, the disillusioned university lecturer assigned to tutor her. As their lessons progress, both characters are challenged to rethink their assumptions about class, culture and personal fulfilment.

Known for its sharp humour and emotional depth, the play explores themes of identity, self-improvement and what it truly means to change one’s life. It was later adapted into an award-winning film, further cementing its place as a modern classic.

The Royal Manor Theatre, a well-established community venue on Portland, is known for bringing both classic and contemporary productions to local audiences, and this latest offering promises an engaging night out.
