There’s always lots to look forward to in the world of interiors and 2024 is set to see us get smarter and greener in the home. Multi-award winning interior design company Tobias Oliver Interiors’ mission has always been to deliver luxury interiors which leave a lasting impression on clients, coupled with exceptional service and a sustainable focus.
We catch up with Katie Gilder, design intern at the Berkhamsted-based business, who gives an insight into what the year has in store.
What’s standing out in the way of home interiors for 2024?
“There’s the return of classic/traditional design but with a fresh twist. Ornate furniture can complement an eclectic layout but also feel toned down and casual, typical of modern interiors. Smart living can also merge the charm of the past with the comforts of the future. Smart homes, where technology seamlessly integrates into our surroundings, enhancing comfort and convenience. For example, voice-activated lighting design trends, smart glass and AI-driven homes.
“There’s also unique tiles – oversized, large-scale tiles with a high tactile quality and handmade unique décor, like Zellige tiles. Dramatic patterns, new compositions and unexpected layouts will add grandeur and personality.
While it was a staple in the pandemic, the home office is going nowhere fast. Katie added: “The home office is becoming permanent and embracing productivity and we can see people beginning to invest in ergonomic furniture, soundproofing and stylish design to make their workspaces more functional and inspiring.”
Key materials, colours, textures you think will be popular?
“Rich jewel colours – deep emerald greens, sumptuous amethyst purples, and luxurious sapphire blues evoke a sense of opulence and elegance. These bold hues can be incorporated through accent walls, statement furniture pieces, or even in textiles like cushions and throws. Balance these colours with neutral tones like grey, beige, or cream to create a refined and balanced aesthetic.
“Biophilic design – incorporating plant life into your space and big windows will create a seamless connection to the outdoors.”
Your tips for home styling in 2024?
“Minimalism with a twist – minimalism never goes out of style, but we can take this in a different direction. Clean lines and clutter-free spaces are still key, but there is an added focus on personalisation. Showcase a few carefully curated statement pieces that reflect your personality, such as unique artwork. This blend of minimalism and self-expression creates a space that feels both serene and personalised.
“Layering and contrasting – layer different fabrics and materials to add depth and visual interest. This will make your space feel cosy yet sophisticated. Experimenting with contrasting textures helps to create an inviting atmosphere.
From a sustainable aspect, do you think this will continue to be an important part of interior design?
“Certainly! We can see a significant emphasis on sustainability and eco-conscious living that only continues to grow. Incorporating natural materials such as wood and stone into your interior design not only adds organic beauty by bringing the outdoors in, but also reduces environmental impact. Consider using sustainable furniture, recycled textiles, and low VOC paints to create an eco-friendly haven. These elements will bring warmth and a touch of earthiness to your home.

What you’re looking forward to…any particular projects in the pipeline?
“We have two very different projects on the go. A modern renovation in Harpenden which is very luxe and minimal with lots of neutral colours. And, also a Berkhamsted project with lots of colour, maximalist, art-deco inspired grandeur. A very fun project to be working on!”
