Confidence, discipline and fitness - there are so many reasons for children to experience the performing arts
Students in the Breckland area will learn from the professionals at a week-long musical theatre and commercial dance course at Wayland Acadamy in Watton this Easter. It will be led by Danny Coates – the school’s head of performing arts and an experienced West End performer himself.
“I really wanted to give youngsters in this area the chance to learn from those working in the industry so I am bringing a mixture of musical theatre performers and commercial dancers to Wayland Academy. Throughout the week, there will be a variety of different workshops, a chance to chat with the professionals, ask questions and get advice, followed by a stage show on the Friday night for family and friends.”
He says the course, which he is running with the support of the Music Arts Project in Brandon, is open to everyone, not just pupils at the school.
“I don’t think there is nearly enough access to the arts for young people, especially in rural areas. Even if children are not interested in a career in the performing arts, the benefits are fantastic. It can be great for fitness, for discipline and focus and for confidence and self esteem. The ability to stand up and express yourself with confidence on a stage in front of people is a skill that will benefit you in any profession.”
The course runs from Monday, April 4 to Friday, April 8, 10am to 4pm, and costs £90. Some spaces are still available for children aged 11 to 18, on 07793 955570.
