The coast, countryside, wildlife and history are all on offer when exploring Lowestoft in Suffolk.

1. Park up at Pakefield and walk, or cycle, the Suffolk Coast Path all the way to Lowestoft’s (and England’s) most easterly (Ness) Point (+/- 2.5 miles). Look out for the latest eye-catching developments en route, including campus landscaping at The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, brightly refurbished beach huts and the beach boardwalk.

2. Swoop south from North Lowestoft’s Sparrow’s Nest on a Parks, Piers and Proms Heritage Walk to Kirkley’s Kensington Gardens. Don’t forget to look inland from the bridge to glimpse the Gull Wing crossing getting underway.

3. Culture vultures will love Lowestoft’s birdwatching walk with a difference - follow the 5.5 mile Suffolk Wildlife Trust art trail around the town centre, or follow it from North Lowestoft to Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve near Oulton Broad. Spot awesome feathered friends by street artist ATM - and maybe even Banksy’s seagull on the corner of Denmark Road and Katwijk Way, if it hasn’t had its chips before you visit. Like all of the famous street artist’s 2021 ‘spraycation’ legacies on private buildings, there’s no knowing if or when it might fly off elsewhere.

4 & 5. Try the Pocket Guide to Lowestoft’s Old Town Heritage Trail and recently refreshed Scores Trail up and down the narrow fishermen’s alleys of Old Lowestoft for birds’ eye views, artistic offerings and a would-be Banksy hiding down Martin’s Score by the puzzling Armada Post. Four ‘scores’ are lined up for more gentle makeovers in 2025, along with the red brick town hall. Meanwhile, renovated historic Old Town shopfronts, like the old Star Supply Stores (119 High Street), are already beginning to shine and, where work is underway, jolly murals are putting out positive vibes.
