Caroline Faller, sport and social secretary of Worthing HASSRA a sports and leisure association that provides sporting opportunities at local, regional and national levels, tells us about Worthing’s first Dragon Boat Festival.

“When we found out Worthing was to host its first Dragon Boat Festival, Hassra sprung into action in getting a team together for the Dragon Boat Race. Fifteen willing participants made up our crew, the Hassra Pirates. Luckily the sun was shining on the day as the team assembled in pirate attire in our gazebo, adorned with pirate bunting and balloons. After some basic training it was time to take to the water for a quick practice paddle, up to the start line. Three timed races later, we held the record for the fastest time which got us into the semi-finals. Going head to head with another team we paddled our hearts out but were overtaken at the last stretch – our battle was over. However we were not disheartened, we were proud of our achievement to reach the semis and who knows what next year will bring?! Through sponsorship around the office and from family and friends we hope to have raised in the region of 1100.00 for the day’s charity, WADARS (Worthing and District animal rescue).”
