Gordale Scar stands at over 100 feet high and it’s no surprise that photographers flock to this breath-taking feat of nature,
Like its sister at Malham Cove, Gordale Scar is one of the most impressive gorges in Britain. The retreating ice sheet and meltwater eroded the edge of the cliff far back to form a giant cavern which collapsed to create a ravine.
The waterfalls are a popular subject for photographers visiting Gordale, Gordale Beck runs through the ravine and flows into Janet’s Foss, a small, but pretty waterfall which is believed to refer to a fairy queen held to inhabit a cave at the rear of the fall.
The Scar is also a place for accomplished scramblers and rock climbers, it is unsafe to scramble up the Scar if water is running through it, so it advised you use caution. From the top of Gordale you can enjoy fantastic views of Malhamdale and on a clear day, you can see Pendle Hill in the south that lies in Lancashire just twenty miles away.
